I need to "enable ident" in 10.2. I thought I did this by making my /private/etc/inetd.conf file read

"auth stream tcp wait root /usr/libexec/tcpd identd -w -t120"

but after restarting, I still cannot connect to dalnet because of "no ident response". Is there something different with jag that I don't know? I checked and /usr/libexec/tcpd does exist. help!

yes, but it doesn't run on 10.2. I get an error:

"Sorry, inetd.conf does not contain "#ident stream tcp wait root /usr/libexec/tcpd identd -w -t120""

Ragardless, if you open the script in script editor, all it does is change the inetd.conf to exactly what I changed it to. But the original inetd.conf file from 10.2 has a path of

/usr/libexec/identd

but when I go to /usr/libexec/ there is no identd file.

I'm confused and want my IRC back.

Moving to X Unix.

BTW, in Jaguar, you're better off using xinetd instead of inetd, since the latter only remains for compatibility purposes and may not continue to be availble in future releases of Mac OS X.

so what's you're saying specifically is that the ident.conf file should be

"auth stream tcp wait root /usr/libexec/tcpd xidentd -w -t120"

and not

"auth stream tcp wait root /usr/libexec/tcpd identd -w -t120"

correct?

could the problem be that I did not install the BSD subsystem when I did a clean install of 10.2?

I made a new file called "identd" inside /etc/xinetd.d containing the following:

service identd
{
disable = no
socket_type = stream
wait = yes
user = root
server = /usr/libexec/identd
server_args = -w -t120
groups = yes
flags = REUSE
}

Seems to work fine for me...

explain your post

Considering that there is a checkbox for installation of the BSD subsystem when I installed the operating system and that I UNchecked the box, how is it impossible?

sahara - I'll make the mod and see what happens - thanks.

Thank you. That worked for dalnet, but I still can't connect to undernet, efnet or asylumnet.
