I'm looking for a composite video cable for my iPod Touch 2G. I know that at some point in the past year or two, Apple added some "authorization" to their iPod and iPhone which results in their being incompatible with older A/V cables.
I already ordered a third-party cable from one vendor who claimed their cable was compatible with the iPod Touch 2G, only to find it doesn't work. They claim it was because of the new iPhone 3.0 OS. (I'm not too upset with the vendor, since they refunded my money and didn't ask for the cable back.)
But, that still leaves me looking. Do I have no choice but to pony up for Apple's $50 cable, or are there third-party cables that really do work? And do cables that work on the iPod 2G work on all the current iPhones, too?
(It would suck if Apple starts to "obsolete" cables on purpose (for no good reason) to make people buy new ones when they buy new iPods. I understand the technical reasons why newer iPods don't support charging over FireWire. What are the technical reasons for the older composite cable not working on newer hardware?)
