Since I got my new iMac 20" there seems to be a weird color problem in the finder view options!
When I try to set the window background color, the result is always a lot darker than the color chosen by the magnifying glass!
check this picture (color should be as the border color but the result is darker)
color problem
Any ideas how this can happen?

Have you tried de-skinning OS X? That might be it.

You mean de-activating Shapeshifter?
No, I haven't tried that yet but this has also never been an issue before - it always worked and I use Shapeshifter since a long time!

Ok, tried it - didn't help at all! Looks even worse now! The light grey color of a solid OS X desktop image became dark grey after applying it as a window background color!?!

That's really weird!
Have you tried deleting the Finder prefs?

Ok, I deleted the finder prefs and repaired my color sync profiles (which were broken - once again) but that didn't help either.... damn (one more weird OS X problem)
btw - also happens in a fresh user

Very weird. One last thing to try: a "safe start" (boot and hold shift until login is done).

Very good idea! Solved the problem.......but only for one of my 2 users, the old one not the new one- weird again!!
(and Yes, I had already rebooted after the other things I tried!)

Update:
I was too fast - "safe start" did NOT solve the problem!!
One user acts a little bit different than the other user - both use a darker color than the one I chose with the magnifying glass but only one darkens that color everytime I use the magnifying glass. The other one keeps the color!
Now that's really weird!
edit: i stop trying to solve this for today - it's annoying but the important stuff works just fine.
Thanks Tooki!!

I've had nothing but weird stuff like that with the apple color picker. One thing that seems to work is to select a color from the saved color swatches at the bottom (you'll have to drag a color to save it there first) and THEN use the eyedropper to pick up a color from the screen.
I know it doesn't make sense, but it's the only way I can kick-start the stupid thing to work correctly.

Does it do it with just grays or is it with every color?

Did you try another ColorSync profile in Systempreferences->Monitore->Farben?

That's the profile which I used when I first saw the problem - I now use the iMac profile again but the problem is still the same!
(I'll check again when I get home)

That's weird. Did you try relaunching (the Finder or the OS) after switching the colour profile? I believe a window buffer is created with a colour profile attached and simply switching the profile in the monitor preferences doesn't change the window buffer, so it might make a difference (I admit that I don't undertand much about ColorSync though).
"Colour different than in picker" really sounds like a ColorSync-error. If that's not it and the problem is also there without the theme I have no idea what could cause this.

Seems like you were actually right Tetenal! I was still using the sRGB profile in one user (the other was switched to the iMac profile) and it seems to work properly now (with the iMac profile in both users)!
I think I got quite confused after trying lots of different stuff in 2 users...
Thanks everybody!!
