A reader sent a note that unlike previous OS X versions which have separate device-plugin files for each 'brand' of drive, Panther has a single file. Therefore the past mods (edits to individual brand plugin files) to add support for 'unsupported' drive models won't work. However he sent a guide to how he edited the file in Panther to add support for his Samsung combo drive.

I'm thinking of getting a LG combo drive for my G4 500, and replacing the DVD rom I have. I hope it will work with itunes, but now I don't even think its going to work in Panther. Is this true???

Should I just not buy the LG combo, because it would be useless???

I hope not, because its cheap as hell, and I trust this band, I had them in my PC and they worked flawlessly.

I really want a combo.

I have a totally unsupported CD/RW - DVD combo drive I bought at Fry's and it still burns from Panther sans hacks. It can even boot the system (9 or X)

Bottom line, buy the drive, get it working later

Ok,

I'm going to buy it....

But another question,

Im using 10.1.5 now,

do I need to hack into the system to get it to work with toast???

I'm just going to put it in my opitical bay, I no longer have OS 9, (lost for ever) and long long ago i found a CD hack for OS 9. But will it just work out of the box via toast?
