Today, I just bought a SONY CRX300 CD-RW/DVD.

Before I bought it I didnt check out if it works with Macs or not. And what do you know, iTunes does not recognise it.

Was not happy about that, and on the SONY web page, it said does not support Mac's.

But, with a little dabbling, I used a hex editor and edited the SONY-CDR device, and rename the CRX100E or something like that to CRX300.

Thats all, and everything works flawlessly.

What the??? So if it was that easy to get an unsupported drive to work, then why can't Apple do this? Or created a program that lets us users buy any burner and just put the code name in (CRX300E)??? I mean, if toast allows nearly every burner to work, why can't iTunes?

That my gripe, I hope Panther works with all burners.

I got my Lite-ON 16x burner to work that way in 10.2

10.3 seems to support it though.

Where is that file? My friend has a Sony burner too, and while Toast 6 recognize it fine, iTunes and Finder doesn't.

Maybe this will fix him up.

Ok, well, get your friend to log in as root, (enable it through net info buy activating root)

My crusty instructions.

Easy way?
Restart in OS9, and search for sony cdr and the sony cdr device.plugin is found. edit it with hexedit. Browse down to where you see the names of supported drives, and replace the first 2 with your model. (e.g sony CRX100E with sony CRX300E)

and save. thats it!!! easy!

Hard way?

Go to system prefs ->login panel ->next tab

and click on the one that ask you to ask for name and password

log out
at name put root and what ever the password it.

logged in, go to Sherlock and search Sony cdr

once location, open it with hexedit.

Browse down to where you see the names of supported drives, and replace the first 2 with your model. (e.g Sony CRX100E with Sony CRX300E)

Save and thats it.
