Athens:

Ya, I agree, it has become repugnant. The X-files is one that comes to mind. Just fxxking depict it in Vancouver. Would Americans be less interested if it were dipicted in Canada? Tired of all the sitcoms that feel they have to represent each little community within the US. Ya ya, got it: people are patriots for their communities/cities.

That Perry Mason (Ironside) guy. Forget his name.

And of course 'America's Sweetheart' Mary Pickford.

And King Kong's girlfriend Fay Wray.

Oh and that chic with the big boobs!

RE filming in Canada: It's because Canadian set workers are cheaper and the exchange rate used to give a slight edge to US locations. I dont' know if the exchange rate is as much of an incentive as it used to be due to the gains the loony has made to the dollar.

Vancouver is also a big hit for filming because the city can be almost any other city, it has all the elements for locations within a 45km radius. The set workers aren't cheaper but its all in CDN dollars which makes it cheaper. Stargate SG1 would have never gotten done with its budget if it wasn't filmed here.

William Shatner (is it TWO Emmys now?) grew up in Canada and started in U.S. TV in the late '50s.

When you were young and your heart was an open book, you used to say "live and let live."
But if this ever changing world, in which we live in, makes you give in and cry, say "live and let die."

Same with Toronto. It is so diverse so they can make it look like whatever city they want.

IIRC, BC gives better tax breaks than Ontario does for TV show and movie shoots.

One thing about Vancouver though is the grey. It shows up in Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG-1. The shows are a lot more overcast it seems than shows shot in California or Toronto.

Heh. I was just about to post that Alan Thicke doesn't count.

BTW, I see this one in my local grocery store once in a while. Not a big name, but the rest of the actors on your lists I only see rarely, like at the film fests or whatever.

Yeah, but what is worse is they DON'T make it look like another city. Case in point, movies for Detroit. They don't even attempt to make it look like it really is; just film in a crap location cause that is what people think of Detroit. Some movies at least used/filmed SOME parts in Detroit when the city scape called for it (Renaissance Man for example) and very few, (but only one I can think of right now though cause my loft was in it), was actually filmed all in Detroit (and it is suburbs) was 8-Mile.

But movies like Robocop and Exit Wounds piss me off; they don't even try. I hate that

I understand why it is done, but just change the script/make up a city name then.

It's more about the tax incentives that the provinces and cities give to attract the film companies. The exchange rate was the icing on top of that for quite a while, but the benefits to the bottom line are still there. Plus there are a lot of skilled workers in the industry in both Vancouver and Toronto if the studio decides to film there, so they can hire locally.

New York City also gives great tax incentives and location help for any crew wanting to film there, otherwise it'd be way too expensive.

Indeed. For example, most of the cast of crew of Battlestar Galactica (my second favourite sci-fi show of all time after the original Star Trek) is Canadian.

I had always thought Christopher Plumber was British. His accent must have done that. Wow.

As for RoboCop, once I saw what they were doing, I just ignored where they said they were. I grew up near Detroit, and NOTHING in the movie looked even vaguely like the place. Compound that with the philosophical concepts behind the film (that Detroit was a lost cause), and I hsd to give up on the whole film. Later films by Paul Verhoeven just enhanced my impression that he's got absolutely no credibility...particularly Starship Troopers.

I was reading your post and I thought Georges Bush is probably a Canadian from St-Agapit or Limoilou, near Quebec city.

Yeah, so did I. I mean I knew he was Canadian but I thought he was a British expatriate or something. But no, he was born in Toronto and lived most of his life in Canada. I do note he did some stuff in London though.

BTW, it's Plummer.

Yep, it is. Bad fingers for typing the right spelling of the wrong word! Bad fingers! (I had already "autotyped" the name when I looked him up, and just came back-after seeing I'd mistyped the name in Google-to finish what I was saying.) Oops.
