I'm going on a retreat for work (not by choice) and anticipate that there will be no internet available. Simple things like solitaire or bejeweled are fine. Spyware and ads are not fine. Any ideas?

Bubble Trouble X. Not free but a great game, I paid the $15 (£8) for it.

Have a look at Frozen Bubble too.

Battle for Wesnoth isnt a bad turn based war strategy game. Puts you in a world sorta like Lord of the Rings.

Thanks guys! That Bubble Trouble looks like the best one for me..BUT, when I tried to download it, (and open the icon that appeared on my desktop), I got the error message that no default application had been chosen to open the application. What exactly does this mean? It's happened with several other downloads. Help?

Quinn is a classic. Who in their right mind doesn't like Tetris?

Another fun one for us old-skool types is D2X, an opensource port of the classic shooter, Descent II.

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

OK, I downloaded quinn, but I really can't figure out how to make the pieces move! It seems like it would be so easy, but my arrow keys aren't working and neither is the space bar or mouse pad like I thought it would. What is wrong with me?

If you want some action:

Armagetron Advanced (Tron light-cycles game)
WingNuts is now free.
Minions of Mirth

And take a look at:

Don't know if you're into emulators, but I just downloaded BSNES, which is a super NES emulator, and I've been playing mario kart and super mario world like it's my job. Obviously, a USB controller does wonders for the experience, but it's still awesome using just the keyboard. And it's free.

Tremolous (spelling is off I think) is a pretty sweet game. It's a first person shooter that pits aliens vs space marines. It is multiplayer only as far as I know. You can download it off of apples site. It's off of the quake 3 engine I believe. Runs with 90fps on my macbook with 512mb.
