Hi.

I used to keep my mac on as a web host, but I want to put it on sleep overnight to save electricity and arguments with my mum. So, anyway, I'd like to get a Web Hosting service (I had one before, but some idiot cut me off.)

I really liked how easy it was to put an image on the internet by dragging that file to the hosted folder on my mac, and I'd like to do that with this new web host.

But, the thing is, I need to be able to drag and drop in the Finder. Finder doesn't allow writing to FTP servers, so FTP is out.

Can you guys recommend me a host, and a way to access it by the Finder?

-kick52

EDIT: Maybe I can hack iDisk onto it? (probably not)

First of all, this belongs in the Networking forum.
To answer your question: you can do that with dyndns.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

uh... yes i know.

but i dont want my mac to be my host.

i would like to get a web host, that i could access like it was a mounted disk.

(Sorry about putting it in the wrong forum.. i should have put more emphasis on wanting to hack the finder to be able to write to FTP)

How about .Mac?

Or find another host that uses Webdav.

Any host that runs Netatalk will allow you to mount your home directory over Appletalk/AFP (i.e. the Finder's "Connect to Server" option). Short of that, WebDAV is your only other bet.

You wouldn't want straight FTP anyway, too insecure.

I like AFP, as mentioned above.

ok.. that sounds good. hopefully i can find a webhost with webdav.. (or AFP)

i was thinking about getting a router, and installing OpenWRT, and building lighttpd for it, then enabling WebDAV for that, then sticking a USB stick into the internal USB port.

That would mean i could host my website on that, and use my ibook to easily put stuff onto it via the WebDAV.. sound good?

hopefully i can find a cheap router with wireless + USB + OpenWRT for that...
