I hear that Apple is officially deprecating NSPutStuffInMyMenuBar (or whatever it's called) in 10.5, with no regards to those apps who use it already, as they've always told developers not to use it.
Are you planning to wean yourself off of custom menu bar icons? I've already taken most of mine off, except for Google Notifier and MenuTemperature lite.
What about you?

NSStatusItem has always been supported. It's just the superior UI of Menu Extras that was private. I honestly don't know why they refuse to let developers use one that accomplishes the same thing but provides a better user experience. Anyway, even if they do block Menu Extras (I hadn't heard of that, but it could be), you should still be able to have custom stuff in your menubar. You just won't be able to drag it around.

I don't think NSStatusItems will be depricated in Leopard. I haven't heard of that.

I could have sworn it was.
I may be wrong.

Well, your statement that "they told developers not to use it" makes me think you read something about NSMenuExtra. They've never said any such thing about NSStatusItem.
