So, I put up with about 30 minutes of bitching today from a person who was upset that I haven't sent more money to help people in Japan. They said that $500 is pathetic and that I have no heart. Really?
For some reason, I'm really not feeling this huge impulse to donate. Sure, it's a horrible thing, and I know that they can use aid, but every time I go to the Red Cross site I think about other places that are in far worse shape, like Haiti. So, I end up sending more to Misha Collins at Random Acts.
No heart? I'm all heart, motherf**ker!

No. I was going to, but then decided to send the money to Haiti instead. The Japan tragedy is terrible, and my heart breaks for them, but I think that they are a lot more well set up to deal with this disaster than the disaster that continues to face Haiti.

See? That was my thinking. Sure, they're in a bad way, but just take a glance at Haiti and you'll see something far worse going on. I've talked with Misha on the phone and it's bad, worse than anyone in the US could dream. We already sent $40k and it's just a very tiny drop in a bucket the size of lake Michigan.
So guys, if you want to do something great for others and you have some spare cash, give to Random Acts and help them rebuild hospitals and schools for some of the most needy people on Earth.

I have to agree that money isn't the primary need in Japan right now, rather they need emergency supplies, oil/gas, heavy equipment, bi-lingual emergency personnel, Chinooks, helicopters, pre-fab homes/shelters... Give your money to Haiti or a charity in Africa if you want to help people financially.

Edit: pallets of money won't fix this one. They have that already, plus gold.

The Japanese have vast sums of money, as a country. They can buy anything they require, it's finding the supplies and equipment that's the problem.

I gave to the Red Cross and my company will be matching. I checked off the "where it's needed most" box so they can use it anywhere.

Thank you - the infrastructure is a mess. They need capable bodies.

Really? Because they seem to be doing well with the hospital we helped pay for, and the people who live in that area were really damned happy to get it, let me tell you. It's not a waste, and saying so smacks of bigotry. Simply saying, "you're not good enough for our help" is shameful. These people need schools, they need an understanding of their own worth and their place in the world.

That too. Right now they'd take 200 able-bodied men over $1B.

At least with japan I know the Japanese will appreciate it and build themselves back up again.
Where are you getting this idea from? Haitians are some of the most gracious and thankful people that I know. Don't confuse the need for basic necessities with the Haitian's outrage of years and years of political oppression from their own people.

I am afraid that the New York Times article is not true. Japan Red Cross is now accepting donation from both individuals and corporations. What it cannot accept for now is only relief goods from individual, because they cannot respond every inqurries from individuals. They accept relief goods from corporations.
Other Japanese organizations are also accepting donations. You can find some of them in the following website;
Nippon Foundation
http://members.canpan.info/kik...
Japan Center for International Exchange "Japan NGO Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund"
Japan Center for International Exchange - (財)日本国際交流センター
Ashinaga Fund
http://www.ashinaga.org/e/inde...
Japan Society "Japan Earthquake Relief Fund"
http://www.japansociety.org/ea...
US-Japan Council "Earthquake Relief Fund"
The U.S.-Japan Council...
Peace Winds Japan
Peace_Winds_Japan__English_Edition
Needless to say, recovery from earthquake is truly long and painstaking process, even in rich country like Japan. Both Japanese government and civil society are now too busy with emergent rescue activites to make an appeal to international community for support, but we really need international support. I hope that philantrhropic sector in the US will keep attention to the situation in Japan. There are, and will be tremendous need for the recovery and reconstruction."

Money will undoubtedly be helpful later. But I would rather give later, when relief agencies know what they will actually be doing with it, rather than donate reflexively now to agencies that may not even be involved in the recovery effort later.

I always just throw it up in the air and He (or She) can keep what they want.

Donate money to a good cause (such as the Red Cross) without earmarking it for a specific country or disaster. That way it can be allocated to wherever it is needed the most. If that happens to be Japan, great, but if they simply don't need any more money for aid to Japan, money earmarked for Japan is essentially wasted.

Now that I post this, I'm reasonably confident that this was a joke. It sure didn't read like it, though, so I won't delete this post, dang it!

I tend not to donate money to such things. I use my money for a much more moral and productive purpose: Taking care of myself and my family.
Not that I don't feel for the Japanese, I really do, but they can take care of themselves.

Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

I'll say it. Without shame. That disaster was so severe for them precisely because their country is a sh*thole, and that it is a sh*thole is precisely their own doing.

I have more than enough money to take care of myself and my family for several lifetimes. So, I choose to do something productive. And no, Haiti is improving. New York, now that's a sh*thole. I'd rather live in Port-au-Prince than deal with New Yorkers.

How much of that 1.6 Million will actually go to Japan? They have to pay for the telethon somehow. Also, if there were any "prizes" for donating a certain amount, then how will they pay for those?

The production (which I was part of) was done completely by volunteers. The equipment, food, location, crew, etc was all donated. I don't believe there were prizes for contributions, but if there were, I'm guessing they would have been donated as well. The entertainers also donated their time, so I'm thinking most, if not all, of that 1.6 million is going to Japan.
Edit: All of the checks I saw were made out directly to the Red Cross, if that means anything.
