I just wanted to let everyone here know that my XServe running X Server 10.2.6 finally seems to relay and continue to relay print jobs to the three different HP LaserJets in my office. Print services on the XServe were spotty before, as one or two print jobs would go through from a computer and then any subsequent prints would get blocked up in the server and would not print.

I am sharing my printers through the Xserve and using the LPR proticol. The client computers access the print server via Rendezvous.

The problem seems to be fixed now and I am a happy print spooler.

I have taken all my users off our Xserve and am having them lpr-print directly to the individual printers. As I can't think of any benefits to spooling through th server--apart from imposing user-specific page quotas--I think I'll leave it the way things are. I guess, I'll never find out, whether our problems were fixed by this OS update.

One particular problem I saw--and it was acknowledged by Apple support staff--was that my print queue wouldn't start properly upon server reboot. My workaround was to stop and then restart print services after each reboot.

One change to what I wrote originally:

The Rendezvous print spooling did not seem to work right. Jobs would take forever and some pages would just disappear, only to print out minutes later after replacement pages had already been sent to the printer. I set up IP printing and it seems to be working all right.

It doesn't seem like all of the issues are gone, yet.
