You know, most people tend to overlook its brilliance... Yet when Next Generation several years ago named my favorite series their #4 series of all time I was pretty happy about it

1) Civilization
2) Super Mario Brothers
3) Zelda
4) Metroid
5) NHL Hockey
6) Castlevania

I'd better stop there....

1. Ico (a sequel is in development)
2. Final Fantasy (except for 5 and 8, which suck)
3. Ecco the Dolphin
4. Metroid (even though I don't have much faith in Metroid Prime)
5. Street Fighter (except for Alpha, The Movie, and the EX series)
6. Puyo Puyo
7. Grandia
8. Mario (though Sunshine has issues)
9. Klonoa
10. Rayman
11. Space Channel 5 (Just kidding, but I crack up every time I get to the cheerleader scene.)

My vote goes to Final Fantasy. There's no question those games are the most enjoyable. Learning new battle schemes and magic systems is brilliant, and the story is always complex and deep.

Mario?
Zelda?
Donkey Kong?
Metroid?

For a series, that is.

Single games? Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, and selections from the aforementioned group.

Turok: Evolution is incredible, too. Just bought it for the GameCube and... wow. I'm stunned.

I've missed a lot here, I know. I'll be back

I have I think Final Fantasy something or other cause i see about 100 of them.

its for playstation. And it seems for the most part, i am not doing anything but watching fancy japanese animation movies for the duration of the game. maybe i am missing what makes this game great. It seems im not even holding the control for like 60% of the game.

next generation was a good magazine. when i first started reading that mag, it was a GREAT magazine. smart, funny, nice laminated cover, oversized magazine, etc. kinda went downhill towards the end there. they gave me the rest of my subscription after it ended in some crappy playstation magazine. i dont even own a playstation 2. whatever.

anyway. if we can call a game with a single sequel a "series", here is my list in no particular order.
  • chrono trigger/chrono cross (yes, that snes online weird almost textgame "rainbow dreamers" game could go in here too, but thats a little obscure, and ive never played it). two totally awesome games. chrono trigger is probably one of the best console RPGs ever, chrono cross follows up as my favorite playstation RPG by far. yes. it kicks the ass solidly of FF7. if you havent played it, you are doing yourself a disservice.
  • the super mario bros series. all of them. each and every one of them rules with new and interesting gameplay elements. the frontrunner and inspiration to pretty much every sidescroller/platformer out there today. my favorite one is yoshis island on the snes. so much fun.
  • zelda. not much more needs to be said. i even like zelda 2. that downward thrust thing is so hilarious
  • final fantasy. all of them that ive played are just rad. they seem to be falling into the "play for a bit, watch a really long cine piece" like most of the other playstation games. but whatever.

Yes, this is a problem if you actually like to play a game instead of watching it. I had the same complaint about Metal Gear Solid: Skip all the "Sit there and watch the dull plot" moments and you were left with two, maybe three hours of gameplay.

Of course, the "sit there and read everything from the 'Strategy Guide' gamers" are a mystery to me too. Why bother playing at all?

But, meh, to each his own. Try Final Fantasy Tactics sometime, simple graphics, great gameplay...you could easily spend 60 hours playing this game instead of sitting around watching squaresoft animation.

yes the control scheme is a pain in the ass at some times but it has to be on account of all the camera angles... and the camera angles are neccacsary for the game because it draws the player into the game

i, and a lot of other i would imagine, love the RE series for the incredible story line and its ability to truly scare the player sometimes(maybe it is just me). Its complex interweaving storyline starts in the 1960s while you (as the charachter in the game) is around in the 90s... it also leave many things very cryptic so that you are always wondering why things are happening

oh yea and the remake has the best graphics of any console game out right now hands down...

zelda is good too... cant believe i forgot about that

1) Final Fantasy. The serial aspect is very weak (though I'd been hoping that they were going to find a way to tie them all together in 9, given the last few levels). But never before have a seen a set of games share a common thread, and yet all be different and all enjoyable. The plots -except for 5- were also all quite enjoyable as well.

2) Megaman. Take Final Fantasy. Megaman is the opposite of that. Very strong sense of series, but the games themselves are incredibly formulaic. However, they manage to tinker with the formula enough each time that it stays interesting and fun. Also, though, this game was a pioneer of semi-linear gameplay, and although it hasn't always gotten it perfectly (try playing X3, picking Blast Hornet's stage first) it's done an admitable job of it.

3) Zelda. Perhaps the ideal mix of gameplay with story. And with an incredibly strong sense of series to boot. For example, anyone notice how the final sword from A Link to The Past looks exactly like the first sword from the first game? Or how all the towns from Zelda 2 are named after characters from Ocarina of Time? That may be one of the most masterful workings of the series; chronologically, Zelda 2 is the last game of the series, but they've managed to work all of the prequels back into the plot without a terribly huge number of discontinuities.

1. Zelda and Metroid, tough tie but both games offer very different levels of kick-assness.
2. Final Fantasy, never has a game drawn me in like FF7, and I doubt another ever will.
3. Mario, nuff said.

As for Mac, the Escape Velocity series wins hands down.
