I've even resorted to reading shampoo bottles etc.

I am often to be found scrabbling around the living room deperately for the latest New Scientist or whatever before venturing into the bog. I also make sure there is a decent stack of reading material there (Old New Scientists, Far Side comic books, Hitchhiker's Guide, etc.)

Absolutely. To the point where I will really close off until I find some decent reading material. TO this end, there is reading material in every room in the house, including the bathrooms.
Favorites include This Old House magazine, MacWorld, A book of Theater Anecdotes, Harlod Bloom"s Shakespeare- The Invention of the Human, Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare, Who Cut the Cheese- A Cultural History of the Fart. Oooo. And Amphigoreys. One of my favorite Gorey books.

The DS BRoom contains about 30 books- something for most tastes. We got us Plato's Dialogues for the philosophical Dumper. We got V for those who will be in for some time. We got Hawthorne's and Poe's short stories for those who would be complete in their dumping. We got 50 Classic Horror Tales to scare the shyte oput of you. We got Clinton's book for those who feel the need to even out the void left by evacuating shyte (shyte out, shyte in), we got Sartre for those who would ponder the meaning of their shyte. Of course, there is the obligatory copy of 10,000 Dreams Interpreted. Essential BRoom reading. And there is a Hamlet in every loo for those indecisive dumpers.
We will install an honest to God bookshelf in the master bath as soon as we get proper ventilation put in. Don't want the moisture to be an issue with the paper, you know.

Whatever current book I'm reading. Sometimes I edit hard-copy of papers we're working on, but mostly I just read books.

No way. In and out as fast as possible. I'm usually done in less than 90 seconds. And I'm not shittin' ya.

It's a speedy ritual. Of course, there are different techniques, especially in public restrooms, but we shan't go into details here. Hit me up on AIM for all the public poo etiquette*.

Yup, in fact, I once read an entire R Zelazny novel in one trip to the can... of course, it was only about 180 pages (I think it was The Guns of Avalon).

We have a little shelf of books and mags across from teh can. Everything from old 8ball comics to checkout aisle books on cats (hilarious) to John Barth books. For me, the funniest is to have a copy of The Cantos by Ezra Pound. People seem to be amused by its location in the house.

Once, at some pals, I saw they had nothing around but a lot of cost-co stuff. Trouble was, all of it was in spanish.

"Hmm, do you s'pose peligro might mean danger..." etc.

Actually, yes. Not all that uncommon for me. Although I will say it is not because of a lack of movement. I got no issues in that department. It is usually because I am in the middle of a really good chapter and I don't want to interrupt.
Why not move to the couch after the business of moving is completed? Well, I got me a wife, three dogs and a two year old. Can time is MY time. And yeah, there IS a lock on the door. And yeah, I DO use it.

i've done that even. but usually i grab one of my class books before i start the process.

And I thought I was the only nut who brought his laptop to the can. I'll read a book or anything else even old magazines if there is nothing else to read. I'm usually too busy to read and the can allows me time to sit and read a little before moving on.

Got to agree with the majority - I read at the can to.. Usually comic books, Garfield, Calvin & Hobbs etc...

I usually bring along whatever mystery or sci-fi novel I'm reading (stuff I refer to as "mind candy"). Also leave the latest catalogs from MacZone, MacMall, etc. in there, just in case I get caught short.
