Enclosures I've tried are from:
http://www.cooldrives.com/firen.html - excellent service and prices.

and some others !
http://www.electricdeal.com/cart.php...ireWire+Drives
http://www.themacsmith.com/minidrive.html
http://www.fwdepot.com/drivec.html
http://www.3cross.com.tw/
http://www.compuvest1.com/engine/default1024.asp?65303
http://www.cooldrives.com/usoxdrivenfo.html This one has 2 firewire ports in back and one in front as well as USB, even if it is 1.1.

I hope these help whet some of the enclosure appetites for the moment!

Certainly not the only ones, but a start.

Hmmm... The spelling on www.cooldrives.com is terrible. Some good products are there though. I'd like to buy this DVD-R enclosure but this website won't let me complete an order to Canada.

I've since found that www.cooldrives.com is almost identical to www.firewiremax.com and both are derivatives of www.qualitycables.com even though that the same products on the first two sites aren't on the www.qualitycables.com website. Interestingly, www.utwo.com takes you to the www.qualitycables.com website too.

Anyways, does anyone else sell that enclosure for $100ish, who will ship to Canada (preferably USPS)?

I want to get this DVD-RW/CD-RW enclosure. However this place does not ship to Canada AFAIK.

Does anyone know who else sells this, either in Canada or that ships to Canada?

Eug,

I bought this one also (holds a CDRW drive); I believe they ship international.
http://www.compuvest1.com/engine/inf...ly=&dglobally=

You have to specify a fan and I don't know if they are Oxford bridged.

Regards

Eug,

If you really want the cooldrives enclosure (I have one with with an external Maxtor) call their number at the bottom of the page; they are knowledgeable and helpful. It is Oxford bridged for sure (I can't see the difference in either case; $40 is a good price savings)

Hmmm... Their website specifies $55 shipping to Canada! Ouch! Thanks for the link though. I called them and they have no idea if it's Oxford bridged or not.

I'll either call cooldrives or else see if the local dealers can source it.

You can also try Other World Computing ( www.otherworldcomputing.com ).
They actually do know what they're talking about. Granite also makes
interesting cases. ADS's homepage is another place to try. And I think
Traninternational would be a good one to check too.

There is a very interesting one at Caldrives. It is USB and Firewire and
might be very helpful to back up my friends Lombard.

Good luck,

That's transinternational.com (I forgot the "s")

Hey, check out xlr8yourmac.com for some tips on how to set up firewire cases. There is a good forum and a drive database with good information.

Thanks people. I ordered the cheapo CompuVest enclosure which is now $67. The website wants $55 shipping, but they ship UPS Ground for $15 to Toronto if you phone them. Unfortunately, because UPS Ground doesn't include brokerage, I expect to get dinged for about $20 brokerage fees too. Found a 4.3 GB SCSI 50-pin drive there too. Hopefully it will work properly with my old unused 8500/150 PowerMac.

Nobody seems to know what chipset that thing uses, but my guess is Initio or Indigita. Maybe I'll get lucky and get the Oxford 911. (I'd prefer it because it's the most popular one out there, not because it's faster. The speed is almost irrelevant for ROM drives.)

Eug,

As I mentioned above, I also used the Compuvest with both Hard drive and CDRW with no noticable speed differences for my usage; you should be content in any case, since it is probably not Oxford bridged. Still a good value and nicely done.

Hope your destination fees work out better than you expect.

I got the Firewire case from CompuVest. The service was curteous and the shipping was quick.

Had a look at the parts - it uses the Initio chipset, which is the same one that QPS uses with their DVD Studio Pro compatible DVD-R(W) Pioneer A03 drive. After I got this I found out another place sells one with the Oxford 911 and combo USB/Firewire for the same price and more shipping options for Canada. See [url=http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=104508]here[/l]. No big deal though for CD or DVD.

It comes with audio outs interestingly - can use it as a CD player I guess if the drive comes with a play button. Unfortunately most don't these days.
