A friend's PowerBook stops working, and we figure out that it's the hard drive. That's fine, we buy a new one, slip it in, and all should be good. But now it seems that the optical drive isn't working either. (I don't think this is a recent development, since prior to this it'd been sitting in his room unused for a few months, if not a year or more.) While sorting through some old junk I found another notebook CD-ROM drive, so I stuck that in the enclosure, slipped it into the PowerBook, and it won't boot off it either. I've tried holding down C, Opt, reseting all the various things people usually suggest, etc. It all leads back to a flashing question mark on a folder. So, are both the drives I've tried bad (The one I found is pretty old, so I have no idea if it even works.) or is it something else?

Thanks in advance.
