We are strugling to find a good working Calendar server at my workplace. We can't wait till Leopard is released to try it's Calendarserver, so need something else now. I've been through alot of bloatware groupware apps where the calendar is too tightly integrated with other parts (mail mainly), and also a bunch of badly coded / badly documented options.

The only needs we really have, is that the Calendar server supports syncing with ical, sunbird (preferably webdav / caldav), supports having several calendars with differant rights (secretary functions, team or group calendars ect). A big bonus would be the ability to bind it to our existing openldap userbase, and a web user interface.

The platform can be Linux, Solaris or OsX Server (Panther or Tiger).

Yep, but it requires proprietary software (not ical / sunbird / outlook)

Also tried:

-Zimbra (requires using built in mail server)
-Horde (no documentation)
-Openxchange (commercial version) (did'nt get an awnser on how to configure it to work with an external mail server)
-webcalendar (mess)
-Apples just released calendar server (installs fine, but no documentation)

Can't be this hard, we could even pay money for it

We use Oracle Calendar at work which I think does most of the things you require. It's a bit corporate looking and not the nicest interface, but very robust. Just a thought.

Google "Ajax Calendar Install" and a bunch of web 2.0 style ones will come up that you can download and host on your server for free. check out ajaxian.com

A quick look at Oracle alendar looked tempting, but no sync with iCal? We have an organisation where half of our workers use mac's, and alot of people spend time on the road. Hence we would like an option to use the normal calendaring apps they allready have, and sync them with the server.

Alot of intresting looking Ajax Calendars seem to be popping up!. I especially liked the look of Hula, though it's alpha and has mail integrated (did'nt check if you can use an external server).

There is a small utility called 'OracletoiCal' which exports Oracle data into iCal. Not syncing as such, but this can be run at any time, and presumably automated to do so.

In any case, the Mac client for Oracle Calendar is OK. Not as sexy as iCal, but it does the same sort of thing.
