I am running a 2006 iMac which has given me almost no trouble. Lately some icons (Safari and Mail) have started to bounce and never boot. Firefox is NOT behaving in this fashion and continues to boot on the second bounce. Things I have done: reset the PRAM, checked the disk using utilities for bad permissions and bad blocks . . . repaired both if called for. This has become a recurring (almost daily) problem for the last 2 weeks. The only other thing I can think of is that my HD is at about 90% capacity. Any and all ideas are appreciated.

Does it still happen after rebooting? Have you tried setting up another user account and see if it still happens?

After a reboot Safari will boot by the 6th or 7th bounce. This is acceptable if only it would last. Typically it is back to its old way by the next day.

The latest is that I bought Cocktail and ran it thru all of its paces . . . . no change. Tried to delete Safari and re-install but am unable to do that because it is part of Mac OS. Maybe I should go back to Lion? Can I reinstall Mt Lion? Think it may help. One other thing (if anyone is listening) I have never been able to update to iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3. Must of tried 40 times . . . just won't stick. ARGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

A 2006 iMac? Can you even install Mountain Lion on that? I don't think so. Do you mean Lion? In any case, I think you have to reinstall the OS. Just redownload from the App store.
