Greetings,
The info that I have is that the symbol is a Swedish campground trail marker that signifies a "remarkable feature". The Apple symbol was used on the Apple series and Lisa but Steve Jobs didn't want it used on the Macintosh because he felt it was an inappropriate use of the corporate logo so the curly-q (that's what I call it) symbol made its debut.
Sorry folks, I had to edit this when I realised that I could barely understand my own post.

Though no matter what pumpkinapo says, I will continue to call the key the "Splat key," as named by the geology department of my school.

Some people call it open-flower.

I don't. I call it the command key.

the term "open flower" [i assume] derives from the term "open apple" which was used to descibe the command key on the left side of the spacebar on Apple IIe's [it was an outline of the apple symbol]. the command key on the right side of the spacebar was a solid apple symbol, "closed apple." i think these keys did defferent things [hence the different symbols] but i can't remember..

this is where i think the term "open flower" comes from.

however i call it the command key seeing as it doesn't look like a flower at all.. [and everyone knows the "apple key" is shift-option-k...]

apple logos. lots of happy apple logos. all smiling in unison as Steve, on a really really big screen, waves his hands.

the command key symbol is ctrl-q in cool spiffy fonts which handle that sort of thing.

the command key symbol really doesn't need a name.
anyway it's far too for a name to describe!

[Edit: Apparently, the UBB is unfamiliar with option-shift-k. stars are less happy than apple logos, so I deleted (most of) them].

I call it "the thing on the Apple key."

I never really refer to it, though...

Heck, I don't know the key combo to type one!

EDIT: Oh, I figured it out! Just as you'd expect... control-Q! (But it won't show up here It did in Key Caps... )

I can't figure out how to type it in OSX! The apple still works, opt shift k, but control q gives you nothing. there is no reference to it in keycaps either!

It's not in all fonts, try Charcoal or Chicago
You may want to check out the neato freebie Font Explorer and toss Keycaps
