I just had a friend call in a panic, because he believed he had trashed some valuable business files inadvertently on his LaCie external drive connected by FireWire to his new Powerbook.

What method have any of you had recently and reliably with good success for recovering trashed files? I immediately told him to lock the drive for read only.

Software such as TechTools or DiskWarrior or?

He is running Tiger 10.4.3 .

Suggestions and tips and personal experiences appreciated.

Thanks alot.

ProSoft Data Rescue. Costs $100 (maybe 150) but saved 95% of my Powerbook drive last August when I had a physical problem with the drive. A teeny bit cumbersome (to this power user, anyway) but it was otherwise easy to use and figure out --- without using the manual.

Symantec tools helped me once too, but ONLY use it off the boot CD. Installing anything Symantec on your Mac is just asking for trouble.

Hope it helps.

Another vote for Data Rescue X (or 9). Best recovery program I've ever used.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.
