Ok, we have a G5 tower here that has been flawless for years but all of a sudden we got the beachball when it got towards the end of startup. Then we ran fsck on it and it came up clear. I let it sit for the weekend and now it starts up and shows the user login screen but it won't recognize any of the passwords for the users.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to bypass thru the terminal?

That is a weird one...boot from the original CD, choose what ever language you want to work in and Reset Passwords. Once you get back in, run Disk Utility --> Repair Permissions.
