She's has a one-way ticket to Lohanisburg. Someone who loves her, like her father (supposedly) needs to step in there. Not to say that she's going to go bankrupt, like Madonna, she has enough money to be more-or-less "excess proof". However, the folks she's hanging with, like Snoop, are going to mess her up. It's a lot like watching the proverbial train wreck in slow motion. I've dealt with destructive celebs and trust fund "brats" and she's trying to prove to everyone that she's all grown up and can make decisions for herself, and right now she thinks it's for show, but there are ways to do that without all the drugs, parties, and leeches. Selena Gomez is a good example of handling that transition properly, and what she has going for her is a mother who gives her space, but also isn't afraid to say enough is enough.
Miley, sweetheart, dancing with Molly while popping Valtrex and Doxy is no way to go through life, that burning sensation you're feeling is not your career catching on fire.

She could go either way. If she needs help, I'm not sure what she's going to get from the guy who decided mortgaging her childhood was a swell idea.
More importantly, can someone trace out the lineage of rumpshaking to twerking? Is it just lowering the angle-of-attack?

Some raunchy dance moves, and now she deserves to be compared to a criminal and a drug addict? Get fncking real.

I get that the general public has a taste for observing self destructive lifestyles, sort of like slowing down to check out the accident at the side of the road, but this whole thing is so old and repetitive. Cyrus is now Lindsey Lohan, I guess, but I have a hard time giving a rat's ass.

How about you "get f*cking real"? With the attention and the drugs, she's in over her head. Fun is fun, and youth is for having it, but she's lining up for some serious problems. Word from people who have known her all her life is that she's ditched her handlers and is off the rails. Hanging out with Snoop and the Pound all day, which she's admitted she does, is only going to get her in trouble and do nasty things to her health.

Because I'm tired of seeing promising young people get chewed and spit out by the entertainment industry. In a few years, after she's been in rehab a couple times, she'll wonder what the hell happened to herself. Then all the money she has left won't buy back her self-respect and potential. It isn't just an act, though she may claim it is, she really is falling into the same shit that's claimed all the others like her. I have a daughter now, and seeing this sort of thing bugs me. These are actual people, not just images on your monitor, you understand that, right?

But she chose to be a player in the entertainment industry, and very specifically the part of the entertainment industry that manufactures pop stars, so I can't say I really give a shit, unless she really found the pop star formula opaque, which would be somewhat hard to believe.

If you have an issue which you feel can be resolved, you should discuss it.

I was distracted by her tongue, which was the big misfire IMO.
It was the opposite of sexy. I immediately thought "spaz".

Everyone around here is so angry lately...
I watched the video of her act (don't have cable so I didn't watch it live). It was absolutely embarrassing to watch.
And the tongue...does she think she's Gene Simmons or something?

She's 20, everything is still "opaque". As for not giving a shit, that's the typical human response right now, and we can do better.

Didn't this originate in the porn industry? Has it been reappropriated for non porn stars?

My empathy would grow once she starts down a different path for herself. I feel empathy for people addicted to drugs too, as well as for women who accidentally get themselves pregnant, but feeling empathetic for people on these paths and choosing to remain on these paths is the personal path to madness, because these paths have predictable outcomes. Some of these paths also have constructs that we single-handedly cannot dismantle.
I must ask though, if you feel this way about Miley Cyrus, do you feel the same empathy for people that bought into those bad mortgages, or should they have known better?
As far as the "typical human response", is it? Miley Cyrus is getting a ton of attention now, there are a ton of people that care. I just think much of this is misdirected, because there will be another Miley Cyrus, I guarantee it.

Those are simply excuses to make yourself feel better, they aren't reasons. Yes, I do feel empathy for people who are prey to any predator. Bluntly, I feel too much empathy for everyone, or so I'm told by nearly everyone who knows me.
Miley is getting attention, "tons of it", but it isn't the right kind, and if you'll stop and think for a minute you'd see the difference. The public loves a good celebrity disaster, the more gory the better, and that isn't "caring", it's gawker's block.

Of course there is a lot of negative attention, perhaps the majority of it even, but why not direct our emotions to where they would best be served: the cause, not the symptom? Like I said, Miley Cyrus won't be the last of her kind.
The cause is an industry invested in very short term financial gains and a repeatable formula. Today's music business execs wouldn't even take a chance on Bruce Springsteen because it took a number of years before he became profitable for them!
I'm not saying that the music business should be in place to stimulate our culture in a positive way, it is a business, I get that, but the problem is we keep buying up their disposable short term assets. Miley Cyrus will be disposed of once she is no longer new and shiny, and she'll disappear into oblivion, *that* is what we should feel upset about. The people making money off of her care about her even less than the general public does that was aghast with her performance.
Not only this, but Miley Cyrus is a product of a money making machine that probably could not sell or garner appreciation from musicians without this machine work behind her. Granted, it is exceedingly difficult to enjoy significant financial success without this machine, but when the *entire product* is this machine, and when stripped away there is nothing left, Miley Cyrus has no choice but to be dependent on this machine not only for her continued fame and relevance, but also simply to churn out a musical product that would allow her to feel some degree of self-respect for her own music. This is not healthy, and *this* is the problem. Everything else is just a symptom of this problem, IMHO.

I have no desire to see her spin-out. I found her previous incarnation insipid, so I'm thankful she's past that.
If she does spin-out, that would be objectively bad.
If one has to choose between insipid and spin-out, insipid is the objectively correct choice, but I can't say that's the choice I'd actually make.

This is going to sound flip, but I'm beginning to lose count of societal ills which can be directly pinned on ****ing Disney.
Of course, they're not soley responsible, but it doesn't seem to be from lack of trying.

Back on topic, I'm grateful to this thread for having led me to watch the first Miley Cyrus performance I've ever found entertaining.

I saw it as hypocrisy and another one of besson's "you guys" things. He sees all of these inconsistencies in society and somehow thinks he operates outside of them as some sort of bastion of logic and reason.

Yes. I thought you were very agressive. You pretty much jumped straight to "you suck".
People who think they're right and others are wrong is pretty much the Internet. You'd go out of your mind if you let all of them bug you to this extent. Is there something specific about his strain which is so bothersome?

So one million traumatized kids have fled from Syria, another estimated two million are on the run within Syria, kids who have seen people maimed and murdered, while the US and UK are about to go to war, and the Internet fights and speculates about this one kid whose career depends upon staying in the limelight, who may or may not have gone off the deep end, but who has ample means to recover in some luxury clinic and sell the right to her story to various magazines over the course of a lifetime.
I mean, seriously.
