Nothing but the joy watching our five children unwrap their presents. The smiles and happiness they expressed will last a lifetime.
The grace to be able to call my dad, severely ailing from arthritis, on another Christmas day to wish him a Merry Christmas.
And, to be able to share this day with my wife, who was very close to death this past summer.
Frankly, what else is there?

The Book of Negroes in the hardcover edition.
A handmade flask for rum or whisky.
And we opened up the old fireplace in our living room, that was our present to each other.

Oh, I forgot: we got one of the coolest presents ever!
We live in Northern Europe's applecrate, as it were (das Alte Land begins just a few hundred yards from here). Friends gave us a year-long sponsorship of our own apple tree at a farm just around the corner - kind Jonaprinz Red, which are deliciously juicy and slightly sour. Yum.
Come autumn, we get to pick and keep the entire load from this tree, or twenty kilos, whichever is more. And of course, we get to take the kid out to show her "our" tree (complete with plaque), and show her the whole flowers and bees to apples thing.
I dunno, but that's one of the best presents I've ever got.

Well my family and I opened presents last week. I got a sweet 787-8 model that my dad picked up here in Seattle on the day of the first flight, a crapload of Top Gear stuff all the way from Britain and beat to death by the Royal Mail, some cash, and gift cards to various establishments.

A Big Green Egg!
Have to help my wife pick it up from the store tomorrow. She totally surprised me with it. I have mentioned wanting one in the past, the same way that I casually mention wanting a Porsche or Ferrari. Maybe I'll get one of those next year.

My parents and I got together and bought my grandpa one last year... he had an older ceramic cooker like the egg, but it cracked after a few years of use.

My friends gave me:
• The Cult of Mac book
• Red Dwarf: Return to Earth (The special they recently did) on DVD
• Pirates of Silicon Valley on DVD (one of my favorite movies even if the ending is slightly inaccurate.)
My Uncle gave me new wall which I dearly need
My grandmother gave me an ugly pair of brown sweat pants and knit pullover, both are going back to the store for cash refund
My best mate and I haven't exchanged gifts yet, so I don't know what I'm getting from him
and then New Years, the rest of my friends are doing a Yankee swap so I'll probab;y be getting something from that too.

I got a BMW R1200R, but I'd known about it for a while, since I actually went with them to order it. Also, got some books, spirits, cigars, Vanson jacket, and BMW boots and gloves.

We had dinner at a friends' home last night and we got an automatic bread making machine... I'm pretty excited about it, but scared too-I may go making bread just for the smell and wind up eating a lot more of it than I should! Seriously, this is a nice gift and the only issue is where to put the thing when I'm not using it.
Anybody else get "second round" gifts?

I wouldn't worry about eating more than you should - I don't mean to rain on a thoughtful gift, but bread from bread making machines is universally mediocre in my experience. I bake a lot of bread, artisan sourdoughs etc, and bread making machines fall short in three areas:
1. Time. You need to allow for enzymic action to happen when baking bread. I often let my doughs rest for 24 hours or longer.
2. Temperature. Bread needs a hot oven, ideally 500º for the first ten minutes.
3. Moisture. Commercial bread ovens are steam injected, at home I use a cloche to simulate a high moisture environment. A bread machine can't go there.
If you're really interested in baking bread do a google search for "No knead bread" and start from there. With just some basic ingredients and a Dutch Oven you can create bread that will rival any commercial product you can buy.
Here's one of mine:

The important things:
In addition to some gift cards to get the remaining tools on my "to purchase" list. And some random clothes, candy, etc. And my mom did a "Necessities Scavenger Hunt" again, where she hid household items around the house and wrote clues as to where to find them. It's fun for her to do and now I don't need to buy garbage bags, dish soap, shampoo, etc. for a long time.
