in tiger, if you click your hard disk in a finder window sidebar, you'll see that kernel files are hidden.

now click and drag the hard drive either from the desktop or from your computer icon in the finder sidebar and drag it into the dock.

now click and hold the hard drive icon in the dock, and you'll see a shortcut for 'mach' and the file 'mach.sym'

yes, this is another of the annoying bugs of Tiger. You can combine that with the "Library" in Network Finder windows,

In the meantime, there was a hint over at macosxhints.com to get around this - you can make a '.hidden' file in the root directory containing those mach filenames, and then they will not appear in said menus.
