It seems he's assumed dead.

But the search continues.

Fossett Likely Won't Be The Next Amelia Earhart

Most Aircraft Lost In Nevada Eventually Located

Despite the most intensive search effort in US aviation history, millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett and his Decathlon remain missing in northern Nevada... and his friend Sir Richard Branson is afraid the aviator might be lost "forever."

But analysis of previous aircraft search efforts showed that Fossett is not likely to become the next Amelia Earhart, the aviatrix who vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 and was never found. Research by the Reno Gazette-Journal revealed only three other planes that have disappeared in the area since 1949 remain undiscovered.

Fossett vanished on what was to be a short flight out of the Flying M Ranch near Yerington, NV on September 3,

MINDEN, Nev. - Millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett vanished somewhere across a landscape of soaring peaks and sagebrush desert notorious for winds so powerful and tricky they can swirl an airplane like a leaf and even shear off a wing.

As the search for Fossett dragged into a second day Wednesday with some false leads but no sign of the 63-year-old aviator or his plane, some veteran pilots speculated he may have fallen victim to the treacherous and sometimes deadly Sierra Nevada winds that squeeze through the narrow canyons.

“There’s been times when I’ve been flying in the wind and my blood turns cold,” said Adam Mayberry, a private pilot and former spokesman for the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

I miss him!

For a "bazzilionare" he was way cool!

At least he did things, because they were cool things to do!

He didn't just use his money to make money, he tried to make his mark...

It took more than just money to buy his mark, it took guts!

You were a gutsy guy Steve and I respect that.

I hope you are found some day,

I will always remember you with the respect and admiration you deserve!

What a cool dude! Even though you were one of those rich guys, I feel like you were a guy who was rich!

Either one would be preferable to just dead.

On an island. That prompts a nice mental image.

Tupac and Biggie? Out of all the deaths of people, you pick those two? What about Joplin, Morrison, or Hendrix?

Having lived in the Reno/Tahoe area for the past 4 years, I can vouche for the high winds and rugged terrain out here. 737s get tossed around going in and out of Reno International, and I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to fly a plane 1/10 that size in the winds around here.

Also, Nevada is the most mountainous state in the Union. So, I'm sure that makes the search efforts much more difficult. There are just too many nooks and crannies in terrain like this.

The research report may be true BUT I doubt the findings of the 'research' is true. They found 6 (or was it 8) previously unfound crash sites that had not been discovered since their respective crashes. Nevada's an awfully big/empty/rocky/desolate place. Give me an 18 wheeler and I could hide it out there for 1000 years.

Well, it looks like they have found his plane... but no human remains yet. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/02/ste...rch/index.html

I was so hoping he pulled a disappearing act and was living on a desert island.

And maybe he is.

Heard this on the news this morning, but I didn't realise its been nearly a year since it happened!

It'll be much easier if you just comply.
