Anyone know of a light-weight text app for the iPhone 3G? By lightweight I mean something that doesn't take a full minute to open (I have TextNow and I've tried a few others, but they usually take a while to open). I just need a text app that allows me to avoid having to use regular text message that the phone company will charge me for. (I have a work phone and we don't have a text plan.)
Thanks in advance
Should have said a text-messaging app (SMS).

I've just used Notes for that sort of thing. Not very full-featured, but it works pretty well and it's pretty fast.

Sorry - What I meant was a text-messaging (SMS) iPhone app.

The built-in app works fine for SMS messages, at least for me.

Mail's pretty snappy. I'm pretty sure you can use that by addressing your texts to phonenumber@txt.att.net.
I've never done it so I don't know any usability details.
Edit: duh, that's just for AT&T, there are other addresses for other carriers. It's an easy Google.

Since " [email protected]" and similar email-compatible addresses are wonderful targets for spammers (and text spam sucks far worse than regular spam because the recipient often winds up paying for it, AT&T (at least, probably other carriers) allows the user to block texts sent to [email protected]; you can set up an alias real email address like " [email protected]" so that only legitimate email-to-text messages get through. This does not affect SMS-originated messages, only email-originated messages. It's a wonderful thing to do, trust me!
I mention this only because if you use Mail to send texts, you might get blocked. Know whether or not your intended recipient has blocked email-to-text messages before you to this route. It is a great option when you're at your desk and it's "inappropriate" to break out the phone to start texting someone you really need to contact...
