FXHome has made a free version of its HitFilm 3 Pro combination video editing and effects suite available to download. HitFilm 3 Express is a trimmed-down version of the main Pro package that keeps the main features of the software, while still allowing video producers and indie filmmakers to edit their movie and add visual effects, without subscribing to the Adobe Creative Cloud or paying a considerable amount of money.

Said to be developed to run on consumer-level notebooks as well as professional hardware with GPU acceleration, HitFilm 3 Express offers over 120 of the basic effects filmmakers require, including chromakey, color grading, lighting and lens flare effects, and others. Tutorials explaining how to perform various editing effects are also provided to users via the support pages and forums.

While the main pack is free, users can pay a small amount for various add-on packs to expand its utility, without paying for Pro. Packs including support for Dolby AC3 and AVCHD video formats, audio-visual customization, more color grading options, and a 3D models toolkit are also available, along with packs providing various assets and effects based on themes, such as sci-fi adventure, damage, destruction, film looks, and a repair pack to fix issues after the shoot has finished.

HitFilm 3 Express is available for both Windows and Mac, and requires a 64-bit operating system, 650GB of hard disk space, a Core i3 or higher processor, 4GB of RAM, and OpenGL 2.0 graphics with at least 512MB of video memory.
