I actually know quite a lot about taking care of cockatiels since my family has had a couple of them for the last 12 or so years. However, I will be the sole caretaker for these two birds come June, and I wanted to ask some advice.
For other bird owners out there - how do you keep your birds active throughout the day? I'm concerned because my mom works freelance and is always at home to take care of the birds, but once she moves and I start taking care of them, I'll only be home in the evening. It just doesn't seem like the best way to take care of them.
I was thinking of maybe playing some music or clips of people talking at a low to moderate volume throughout the day. Would that actually help? I do have plenty of bird toys and hangout spots (they especially like wicker baskets so they can exercise their beaks). I'm mainly concerned that the lack of activity is going to make them bored and could lead to self-destructive behavior like plucking.
The good thing is that there are two of them. Even though they're both hand raised and prefer humans to other birds, they still like to keep each other company. They're both females so they won't be breeding.
Any other advice for taking care of birds when the only person at home works most of the day?
