There's a video out there somewhere of a bunch of engineering students from Purdue kicking-off a bbq with liquid oxygen. It goes quite well. But, they kinda knew what they're doing.

It wasn’t just students. There was a professor in on that. They got a cheap charcoal grill, filled it with charcoal, then timed how long it took for the coals to get to “the right temperature” for cooking.

Without “help”, it took a long time. Then they repeated the experiment with LOX.
Here’s the Wiki article on the prof..
And here’s a video.. (Sorry, I still haven’t figured out embedding YouTube videos.)

For fans playing at home, the method for embedding YouTube videos goes like this...

The youtube url for the video looks like this: youtube.com/watch?v=UjPxDOEdsX8
To embed the video, you only need the alphanumerical garbage at the end of the url, the UjPxDOEdsX8. You then have to manually type “youtube” in brackets, and add the UjPxDOEdsX8.

The code will look like this (but without the space between the first bracket and “youtube”. Even though it’s in a code box, if the space isn’t there, I get the video.)
Code:
[ youtube]UjPxDOEdsX8[/youtube]
And, why is the code box so goddamned big? It’s one friggin’ line of code.

You can use the tt tag instead of the code tag… no idea why it’s tiny.

They're lucky the fuel didn't ignite when it released itself. And I wonder what happened to the repair checklist. Maybe one of the security dogs ate it?

As it is, this may be repairable. Some military planes replace the wings periodically to extend lifespan (the A-10), others take them off for shipping and/or storage. But someone's going to pay.

In this particular case, FWIU, it was scrapped.

Also, while definitely lucky it didn’t explode, FWIU the leaked fuel ended up in a creek.

Awww. Sad C141 was very sad.

A similar “oops” happened with a KC135, but with a different test. They were testing internal pressurization, and as noted in the text on the site, the civilian doing the test was using a homemade gauge and no formal procedure. Write off one KC135:

More pix on the site, but the one I used should tell the whole story.

I just figured out my work doesn't block the redd.it links, but it does block gfycat, which is why I haven't been able to see the last page or two of goodies.

Are you implying I get all these from Reddit?

Sadly, only i.reddit works for IMG tags. I use gfycat when it’s a v.reddit link.

Answers to probable questions:

1) B-52, Guam, 2016
2) No death
3) Birdsuck during takeoff
4) Might have lit on fire due to overheated landing gear being snapped into the fuselage when the plane left the runway

Going from just the picture, it appears they aborted the takeoff with too little runway left to stop. Not even with the braking parachute.

Scraping metal across concrete can generate sparks, so there's an ignition source.

With 8 engines, I'd think it would have been better to kill the birdy engine, then complete takeoff. Circle around and land with sufficient runway.

IIUC, they lost three out of four right engines, and the fourth appeared to be in the process of dying.

Also, the drag chute didn’t completely open.

It’s possible there might not been much scraping on concrete. Gear was still intact until it left the runway, and it managed to clear some of those orange thingies.

Also, also… the end of the runway looks clean except for the skids, which look like they continue into the dirt.

A flock of birds then, not a single birdsuck. A pilot's nightmare.

The tire skids continue, but the engine skids only appear at the walkway. So the landing gear collapsed, dumping the plane to belly-skid to a stop. Ignition sparks could come from the walkway, the scraping belly, or even the busted landing gear. Landing lights are often attached to gear on big planes.

Looks like it had aux fuel tanks attached too, which couldn't have helped. More fuel to leak, and more weight fighting takeoff.

I’m not sure a spark was even necessary. Just the heat buildup from all the emergency braking ending up in the fuselage when the gear snapped.

Andersen AFB, on Guam, has two parallel runways, 10,527’ and 11,200’ in length. B52s typically launch with less than a full fuel load, and refuel after takeoff. The B52 takes a while to get up to speed, and that’s a problem; there isn’t a lot of slack between “gotta rotate and lift off” and “gotta abort.”

The accident investigation concluded that the drag chute didn’t fully deploy, putting excess breaking load on the landing gear brakes. The report doesn’t say that the brakes caused the fire, only that the plane caught fire after it ran off the runway. Considering the ruggedness of the area past the runway overrun, lots of things could have caused a minor fuel leak that was ignited by almost anything - though overheated brakes are certainly a possible culprit.

Is the cable hardwired in. A longer one could run under the feet and would make the whole thing a lot less tippy.

Just to show how my life experience has been, I ALWAYS make sure I have a carry strap/lanyard on anything I might drop, and I apply said strap/lanyard before using whatever I have it attached to.

Because that guy’s mishap is something I sort of expect to happen to me, and I don’t want the kind of sad the guy clearly had.

I do not think they practiced that enough before trying it while being recorded. It looks like the girl kicking got her leg about as high as she could, which wasn’t high enough.

I wonder what “relationship fallout” resulted from this oops.
