Well, there is a thread for college and high school, might as well be one for elementary school too.

So, for people about to send their kids off to kindergarten through 6th grade, would getting them an iPhone be useful? I'm thinking that the ability to check stocks and weather while sitting at their desk would be beneficial to an elementary school student. It will help teach them finance and meteorology. Not to mention, the built-in calculator would be a tremendous advantage for those math assignments requiring addition of 2+3.

You forgot AIM! How can those kids survive the day without chatting with other classmates?

No joke--there are parents who would do it! Forget about elementary school--how about nursery school?

Because it's not.

Besides, this is a valid question, even though my initial post may have been sarcastic.

That's not a real word. I looked it up. And it's not even an original invented word. It's been used here and here (about half way down). Wait, is that me being grumptastic? Damn it.

BTW, it's YOUR, not "you're". And in a thread about the benefits of iPhones in elementary school even. Shame on you.

Nope, that's you being contrived.

I think we should shove an iPhone into every pregnant woman's uterus. You have to start these kids out early you know.

However, in this situation, we might want to wait for the iPhone shuffle.

I have to point out that there are specific phones designed for young children, and the iPhone is NOT one of them. They, like the Jitterbug (which is designed for older adults) are simple, voice-only devices with limited dialing capability (sometimes a total of three or four pre-programmed numbers). This is a Good Thing in a lot of cases. But the iPhone is NOT something a young child should use regularly; the manual dexterity to operate it, and the knowledge base needed to use most of its features, are not developed until a person is in the neighborhood of 10 or 12 years old.

I also (er hem!) have to agree with Dakar; this didn't start in the Lounge. As a concept, I think giving an iPhone to a kid that's starting elementary school is $199 up front and $40/month worth of dumb. But as a concept, I also think this discussion should be in the Lounge, not a hardware/technical forum.

Exactly. I mean, it's not like they're doing anything else for those 9 months they're getting a free ride.

Personal electronics, elementary-aged children, and school settings don't play well together. Any parent, pundit, or uninformed bystander who thinks otherwise is simply wrong.

Actually, the "er hem!" was to emphasize what I was talking about.

Hey, my 9-year old son REALLY wanted my first gen iPhone when I upgraded to a 3G iPhone. He's going into fourth grade! Of course the answer was easy - I sold it on eBay for $350.

Program it with a photo album of all the local sex offenders. Make them memorize it on the bus and in their spare time.

I'm thinking of putting one in my coffin should I die. I will be able to manage my portfolio and bank accounts in order to generate income to pay the annual contract well beyond my burial date.
