Mail won't quit properly

Someone sent me a huge file in an attachment, and I I lost patience while Mail was downloading it, so I quit mail in the middle of the download. I accessed my email via another route and made sure the message with the huge file attachment was deleted. I then went back into Mail and the message is still there. I try deleting it, but now Mail gets stuck on a process called "Reading table of contents" -- it just sits there reading this thing forever until I force-quit Mail. Then the message comes back and this happens all over again. I can't seem to quit Mail properly or delete this message.
How can I break this "reading table of contents" loop without actually deleting any of my stored email?
Thanks in advance!!

Excellent, repairing permissions fixed everything, as was described in that thread. Thanks a lot gorickey!
