I remember reading that iTunes would create three optimized images for each picture. The first image is a thumbnail for the thumbnail gallery in the iPod. The second image is the iPod screen-sized version for display on the iPod. The third image is optimized for output for TV-out.

Now that the iPod nano doesn't do TV out, does iTunes also copy the TV-out version as well? On the iLounge site, it approximates one picture to about 770K. I was just wondering if the photo cache library is smaller on the iPod nano or if it is the same as what we get on the full-sized iPod?

No it creates a thumbnail, and the orignal (if you check the option to include full-resolution images)

I highly doubt the iPod Nano will ever do TV-Out, or have any accessory that does, as I don't see any chipset on my Nano for this.

Here's the paragraph from www.ilounge.com regarding the photo library:

As noted above, iTunes resizes and indexes your photos during the transfer process. By default, it creates three versions of each photo: two for viewing on the iPod photo’s screen (one for thumbnail mode and one for full-screen mode), and one suitable for viewing on a TV screen (through composite or S-Video). This pre-processing creates photos that look very sharp on the iPod screen even in the smallest thumbnail view.

This also helps to save space on your iPod for other things, since if all you ever intend to do is view your pictures or show them on a TV, you don’t need a bunch of five- or eight-megapixel pictures taking up more space on your drive. Even without the full resolution photos, each photo requires approximately 776kb of storage.

But if you do want to carry around the original pictures - perhaps for transferring to other computers, or printing - you can do this by selecting the option to “Include full-resolution photos.”

I was just wondering it optimizing for the nano would take out the image needed for TV out.

Yeah, someday we'll get the perfect iPod....

Apple appears to be placing the iPod nano as the mid-range product where the iPod mini used to be while the full-sized iPod is priced more for the high-end market for power users who want a multi-function iPod.

The iPod nano doesn't have the higher-end iPod features 'cuz some people don't ever use things like downloading photos from a USB camera, microphone recording, or TV out.

I have a 20GB iPod photo and I've never used any of those features. It's nice to have but most of the consumers who would buy the nano or shuffle will use the iPod mostly for music and not much else. The only really feature I've used for my iPod 20GB is to use it as a portable hard drive to backup or move stuff.

No way it's 700k+ per photo on the nano. I loaded 70+ images on mine and didn't even see a dent in my overall space available. Considering the rez (176x132) we should be talking about 30k MAX for the large image, and maybe 10k for the thumb.

Which is pretty darn fun as I think I can cram my entire photo collection on there and still have plenty of room for music.

I have a related question -- my nano currently has about 150mb free and is set to sync my entire iPhoto library (around 3500 pictures). iTunes and the nano information screen show that only 985 are on the device. However, when I look under "Photos" all of the photos appear to be there, and I can view them all. Seems like a bug, but I was wondering if anyone else with large iPhoto libraries has the same issue.

Just loaded up my new nano with a couple hundred photos as a test and the .db file is only a few megabytes despite the pictures having reasonably good quality.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the nano and it more than meets my expectations for what I got.

The nano is perfect for people to share photos while on the road. I share my family pictures on my iPod 20GB in the same way some people use their camera phone to show their pictures.

If you really wanted to connect your iPod to the TV to display a slideshow, it would be better to get the nano's bigger brother iPod for that capability.



Porn is what jumpstarted the DVD industry. I saw an article in Japan about the first wave of X-rated UMDs coming out for the Sony PSP this fall. Imagine the spike in PSP sales when UMDs saturate the market!

I think Phat Bastard should trademark the term iPorn before Apple does.
