Quick but stupid question:

I'm thinking of moving my router.

Currently I have:
cable modem->apple extreme->switch->gadgets.

If I move the apple extreme it has to stay in that config doesn't it?

You mean physically move it or do you mean something like putting it after the switch?

Yes, your router must be attached to the cable modem.

I assume you want to extend the range of your wifi, right? You could do that by adding an Airport Extreme/Express to your network. (In theory you can use many routers, but having tried this myself recently, I can tell you that in practice there are many road blocks, especially if only consumer-grade routers are involved.)
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
