Hello all,
I just got my ATI XT800 card the for 2 weeks, which replaces my Rev. A G5 9600 (64mb) card. I can detect the screen refresh a bit faster and I am sure I will benefit from it.
However, after 2 wks of use the fan noise really starts annoying me like hell. It sounds like my old crapy PC!! I miss the fanless video, although somewhat lame 9600 card.
I wonder if the 9600XT (with more ram than the stock) card is available to public, or better yet, the new 9650 card? I know 9800pro is also a very noisy card.
I am not a huge gamer so I don't need absolute top-notch card, just want something better than my stock 9600, and as quiet.
Thanks for your advise.

Which ROM revision is on your card?
If it is 104 then you need to install the installation package to have fan control. A 104 ROM with no "ROM Extender" will run the fan at 100% all the time.
If you already have ROM 108, then no need for the package as fan control is included.
There are also much quieter after-market fans.

Check out the graphic card coolers they have - these are supposed to be the best. No idea on the price.

I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

I read here on MacNN somewhere that the 9600XT is faster than the new 9650, so I'd recommend the 9600XT if you're going that way...

get a 9600XT on ebay. It'll be plenty fast for everything, even casual gaming. I LOVE mine.

FYI: I have an Arctic Cooling fan/heatsink on my PC on my Athlon 64, and it is ace! I could not reccomend it highly enough, totally silent, very efficient.

thank you for suggestion. would you mind telling me which model you recommend for XT800 card (they have two models for it, and I don't know if PC version and Mac version can use the same)
Thanks.
I also went to that Korean company about fanless heatpipe cooling system. Very interesting.

Why bother? He said he isnt' a gamer.... which means that X800 he has is total overkill for anything he's doing. A 9600XT is a fast card, and totally silent since it has no fan whatsoever.
