Alternatively, some provider websites allow you to send SMS to one of their customers' phones via a web form. Orange in the UK, for example, allow something like 30 free messages per month (you have to get a free login) using their site.

i thought ICQ let you send SMS? i haven't used it in years, but i'm sure it lets you do that. hmm. curious, now. i think i'll install it again. i'll get back to you after i've dealt with the 349868325 spam message which attack me as soon as i log on.

That's what swisscom offers here as well. But you have to give in your phone number to register.

no idea, and no. i installed it before, was nearly sick when the interface appeared on my screen, quit it, and then promptly trashed it.

i took a screenshot first and sent it to the kitten, to make her ill too

I believe they're free when you send them from ICQ.

orange.dk used to have a similar service where you could just send SMS'es from any phone number to any phone number, but they shut it down pretty fast due to the obviuos misuse (you didn't have to register or anything, just go to the site, enter "From" number and "To" number and write, didn't even check if the numbers were real - result: spam)

They are free using AIM as well.

For a US number just send an IM to +1<area code><phone number>. I'm not sure the format for international phone numbers.

See what we really need is to have a weekly MacNN conference call every Friday via teleconference. When I worked for big pharma, we'd always be holding TCs with our counterparts in other countries and perhaps some WebEx-type stuff from time to time. Cool thing about it is that you dial into a local TC access number, enter the room code and pin, and all the participants are bridged and the call quality is excellent. I guess it's a similar system to what companies use when they hold Q&A sessions with analysts, etc.

Imagine the high drama taking place every Friday.
