Hmmm.

Now that I am thinking about anime movies, I would have to say that I liked Spirited Away a lot.

Buy it now! I had to own this one, it's sooo good. Hey, nonhuman...down boy, down!

I just bought Metropolis on DVD, but have yet to see it. Soon.

And finally, I was lucky enough to see Spirited Away in the theater. I even caught the subtitled version. I was completely blown away when I walked out of that theater.

Watch Tenchi off of toonami and it is much better. They censor it so much that they actually went out of their way to superimpose clothes on the characters in one scene! F**k toonami and DBZ.

As for me though I liked Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Panic, Hellsing, Love Hina, Video Girl Ai,
Please Teacher!,
Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind -BEST MOVIES EVER- and so far what little of Yu Yu Hakusho I own.

I wanna know why I haven't seen any fantastic western cartoon shows in a real long time.

Well my favorite anime right now would be
Onegai Teacher.. Some others: FLCL (the characters are soo freakin nuts!)
Love Hina, Full Metal Panic, Those Who Hunt Elves, and Hellsing (as you can see from the sig)

Avoid DBZ like the plague!

One thing that bugged me about the Wings of Honneamise is that Shiro attempts to rape Riqunni - I mean he stops as he sees absolute terror in her eyes - then gets knocked out by a candlestick holder.

I kinda felt this topic -or rather Riqunni's inability to commit to a direct relationship with Shiro deserved more attention.

Otherwise, it's a really terrific film with NASA-like animation of the rocket sequences, hysterical scientists, a fabulously original soundtrack, and the overall theme of establishing some sort of peace -within ourselves and the world.

Wings is a very interesting case. Watch it both dubbec and subbed.

The actual lines used in the Japanese and English versions of the film -and both the sub and dub scripts- are virtually identical; the company which produced the Japanese had a very strong role in the translation. However, due solely to the different ways the lines are delivered in the two versions, they are two completely different movies. This was intentional; the movie was an experiment in whether or not one could completely change the tone of a movie simply by delivering the same lines in different ways. The results are very intriguing.

Yeah, those look to be real cool.

And they "Digitaly Rematered" them from originals, so the color and clarity will be better than what you are use to (from old VHSs and current TV broadcasts)

I wish they could do them as "Year" sets, Like season sets, but for each year of WB animation.

-3/06/04-

Instead of creating a new thread I though I would bump this one.

Since I last posted in this thread a lot of new anime had come my way...

Anyone else into Full Metal Alchemist? This show is rocking. I hope it gets licensed and released soon in the US.

I now have Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi on DVD Vol 1, 2, and 3. Crazy stuff, very light hearted, +17, hilarious stuff (imho)

And I have finnaly gotten Haibane Renmei. I have disc 1 and 2, and 3 is on the way.

Oh! and Last Exile this show ROCKS, the first 2 eps I saw fansubed threw me off but after lots of recomendations I finnaly bought disc one... and 2, and now have 3 on the way. Great show, interesting story and amazing integration of 3D and 2D animation.

Anyone recomend any new anime? (DVD or Fansub (aka unlicensed))

Anyone get into some new stuff?

Still trucking along with GITS:SAC 2nd Gig, and got some new toys on the weekend:

And I have a copy of "Wonderful Days" sitting around if I ever get the time to watch it. "Macross Zero" was pretty cool.

I'd recommend:
  • Ippatu Kikimusume (A series of shorts involving hilarious life-threatening situations)
  • Karakuri-Zoushi Ayatsuri Sakon (A puppeteer and his puppet solve puppet-related crimes)
  • Macross Zero (Prequel to Macross, excellent animation, we all know the drill)
  • Oruchuban Ebichu (Hilarious comedy about Ebichu, the housekeeping hamster. And it's Gainax, and they're always good)
  • Planetes (Garbagemen in space. Extremely good)
  • Sakigake!! Cromartie Koukou (A fairly bizarre parody of high school delinquent anime)
  • Sumeba Miyako no Cosmos-Sou Suttoko Taisen Dokkoida (A lighthearted superhero comedy)

Sweet toys there!

Hmm Oruchuban Ebichu seems... interesting I just read the Animenfo page for it and a few reviews... "This show is not for children, but it isn't pornography either."

[edit: oh, and I had Planetes Phase 01 downloading when I read your post, glad to hear its good. Its by Sunrise right? (those behind Cowboy Bebop and Witch Hunter Robin). Garbagemen? Animenfo said nothing bout that ]

I found them on the weekend, and just had to grab 'em. I should go back to the store and see if they still have the "Gunsmith Cats" figures!

I get a lot of recommendations of new/recent things to watch, but at this point don't even have the time to watch everything I already have. The R1 of "Azumanga Daioh" is coming out next month, so that should be fun to watch again.

Macross Zero, Macross DYRL
Pretty much any Studio Ghibli film
Akira and Megazone 23, but only for the motorcycles
GITS:SAC the movie, not so much (liked the manga though!). But like others, can't wait for Innocence and season2 of SAC!

Old school props for Gatchaman, Robotech (err- Macross), and the one about the cities of gold.

The imaginations and stylings of Shoji Kawamori and Hayao Miyazaki really affected me. Those cartoons, however crude by today's anime standards, upped the ante in story and quality. I remember rushing home from middle school and soccer practice to watch Robotech or bootlegs of Akira and Nausicaa. It was such a profoundly different experience than watching the Thundercats, GI Joe, TNMT, Looney Tunes and the like.

What's that saying about the type clothes you wear to college are become the style that you identify with for the rest of your life? I think that also applies to anime as well.

It's very funny, but it's not afraid of sex and cartoon violence. In fact it loves them. And while there's a bit of that in Ippatu Kikimusume as well, that series is more focused around getting the characters into and out of absurd life-threatening situations.

[edit: oh, and I had Planetes Phase 01 downloading when I read your post, glad to hear its good. Its by Sunrise right? (those behind Cowboy Bebop and Witch Hunter Robin). Garbagemen? Animenfo said nothing bout that ]
Yeah, Planetes is probably my favorite thing lately. I liked the series enough that I went out and got the manga, which is also quite good. But they're a little different, and one can spoil the other, so I'd hold off on that till you've at least gotten through ep 10, maybe ep 12.

Garbagemen is about right. The main cast in Planetes work in space, in Low Earth Orbit, and their job is to clear out space debris that poses a hazard to navigation (as you'll see), either by collecting it, presumably for recycling, or dropping it out of orbit so it burns up in the atmosphere. And they're underfunded, underequipped, and understaffed. They get no respect from anyone, because their job is basically as well thought of as garbage disposal is here. It's a fairly realistic show, however, as these things go.

And it is by Sunrise.

Azumanga Daioh is gonna kick ass. I can't wait for it!
Meh. I haven't heard that many great things about the domestic release... particularly the dub. But then, I avoid dubs, so who cares.

Another good series is Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte. It's basically a spin-off from Soul Taker (which was worthless IMO) using the same cast, but a totally different setting. It's a great parody of magical girl anime and tends to go after the fan community. Hell, it's worth it just for what they do with the Big Site convention center.

Read or Die is good, but I think the OAV series could've been stronger story-wise. ROD TV _eventually_ gets around to shoring it up some, but isn't as action-packed as the OAV series was, despite having some great moments.

Yeah Azumanga Daioh does have a pretty bad dub. But I will be watching it subbed.

The Subbed version of episode 1 on this month's Newtype DVD was great imho.

Hmm, Naruto, One Piece, Witch Hunter Robin and the Kenshin OAV (if someone can remind me of the correct name..).

It's also hard to pick my favorite movies of all time, probably Grave of the Fireflies, or Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away as released by Disney).

Damn.. anything from Ghibli is good.. Nausica, Porco Rosso.. so, so, many.

If you guys haven't seen Wolf's Rain, you should certainly check it out. Surreal and brilliant.. it is.

I started seeing "His and her circumstances" which is from the manga KareKano. it's cool, a little girly but it's quite fun.

Metropolis IS BEAUTIFUL. BUT the story sucks ass.

Princess Mononoke is the best anime movie I have seen.

Ah yes. A year or so later, some updates:
  • Ai yori Aoshi is a very good series, if you skip the episodes involving Tina. I'm working on compiling a list of what can be skipped and what can't, because frankly she's the Jar-Jar of anime. If nothing else, watch up through Episode 4 in your first sitting, then stop. This will redeem Aoi in the eyes of many viewers, while not running into Tina (whose first appearance is in Episode 5). First impressions are important, after all.
  • Someday's Dreamers is one of my new favorite anime. The US release was very low-key, and so it never sold terribly well, which is quite a shame.
  • Last Exile is neat. I haven't seen all of it yet, but I like what I've seen so far.
  • Haibane Renmei, while not a fun series, is definitely one people should see. If nothing else, it's a fascinating world.
  • Buy the soundtrack for Noir and skip the anime. Awesome music (one of the best I've seen in anime since they dubbed Sailor Moon), but poor series.
  • Marmalade Boy isn't a terribly good series, but it will eat your soul if you watch two episodes. It is basically the progenitor of every shoujo anime and manga since then, and so it's worth watching if only for that reason. The American release is expensive (it's being released only as a set of three boxes, each costing $100 for 19 episodes) but if you can afford it, it's worth it. This was one of the first series to really use music effectively (not that you'd know in the pro release, since they didn't subtitle the lyrics).
  • Fullmetal Alchemist frickin rocks. I've seen the whole thing in the original, and am awaiting the DVD release with anticipation and fear. This said, whoever decided that showing Episode 7 -one of the most upsetting things in anime ever- on Christmas Day should be shot. "Cartoon Network: Ruining Christmas since 2004!"
These are all available in the US, except for Fullmetal Alchemist, which will start coming out shortly and is already showing (dubbed, but to everyone's surprise completely unedited so far) on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim lineup.

These days, it's Ghost In The Shell Standalone Complex 2, Mai-Hime and 2x2=Shinbuden, all just fansubs at the moment. GITS:SAC 1 and Azumanga Daioh are both getting DVD releases here, so I've been picking them as as they come out. I've heard good things about Galaxy Angel but my local rental place doesn't have the R1 DVDs for some reason. I dunno.

Anybody catch that anime movie on cartoon network a few months back?

"Read or Die" around midnight?

I really liked it. I thought their powers were original, characterization was strong and the twists were great!

However I don't think it's an anime classic because there's no buzz for it and I haven't come across a DVD yet...

and Millennium: I have the Ai Yori Aoshi first disk now via Netflix, I like Tina from the manga. What makes her so annoying in the anime?

The OVAs (which, IIRC, were joined from three half-hour episodes into a single movie when you saw it) were awesome.
I really liked it. I thought their powers were original, characterization was strong and the twists were great!
Agreed, but not only were the powers original, but the ways they used them were original. For example, how Miss Deep used her power (passing through solid objects) to slow her fall.
However I don't think it's an anime classic because there's no buzz for it and I haven't come across a DVD yet...
The DVD is out; in fact, the TV series

I've been following the manga too. The anime and manga seem to follow each other reasonably closely, except that different events happen at different times. The fanservice is noticeably less strong in the manga than in the anime, except for Tina, whose... antics... are much stronger and less discriminate, to the point where it's often tasteless and (later in the series, when Chika shows up) outright disturbing.

Yeah, there are a ton to love. But who here doesn't love Totoro. I mean, hes so cute. (and once again MacNN will not let me post stuff in Japanese, from Japan. Any ideas would be helpful, seeing how others are able to do it..)
