Hi, a friend threw me in the water this weekend and unfortunately my iphone was in my pocket. I shook it for a few minutes and used a hair dryer for an hour, but it won't boot. I have tried several times to start it by holding the power button but it will not start.

Now I read that if you cover the iphone with "DO NOT EAT" silica-gel bags it might cure the iphone. I couldn't get any DO NOT EAT bags but I could buy myself a kilo of dry rice in which i buried the iphone for about an hour already. I will wait for another day until i take it out.

What are my chances of recovering my iphone nd all the important things stored on it??

Yep. Apple definitely will not replace this without charging you.

Give it a few more days and keep trying. A friends kid spilt a glass of water over his PS1 once, it didn't work until a week later.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Hmmm...

Well you shouldn't have tried to boot it so soon, but it's too late for that advice now. Let it dry out for several days or a week and then try it again. Maybe point a fan at it during that time. You may get lucky, but I wouldn't count on it.

In the meantime go and give your friend a firm kick in the ass. How much do the non-subsidized replacements go for? Can you even get one?

Thanks people, I will just have to wait it out The rotten part of this story is that this is my second iphone I've destroyed within 6 months (first one fell on the floor). Maybe I am just not worth delicate gadgets yet. And to be honest I didn't like the iPhone that much, it's too big for a phone and WIFI is not everywhere available.

I have this Olympus Mju 770SW camera that is both water-and shock resistant, it fell in the same muddy creek as the iPhone and stayed a whole night at the bottom, the display was still lit when I fished it out of the water..they should make phones that way.

Maybe you just need a little protection for it.

Not either/or, both of them, all the time, then encase it in concrete, won't come to harm then .

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I went through this same problem in June. Today, my phone is 95% functional. Everything works perfectly (upgraded to 2.0 with lots of Apps) except that the unlock swipe sometimes doesn't work for a few seconds. That's it. My whole tale of woe is in my blog (be sure to follow the comments since there are a lot of good suggestions from other people there).

thx, it all seems hopeful. it's just odd to press the powerbutton and nothing happening.

edit : I heard that Samurai used to put their hands in dry rice. It made their hands so touch they could stab people with it

and Edward Woodward in the 70's spy tv show "Callan" used to sped all day chopping his hands into a bowl of sand.

When you take it out of your rice dryer and test it, make sure you plug it into power for a while. I noticed mine had the battery drained really low during the first phases of the wet-age.

You can't really buy those silica gel packets, but if you go to a store, you can find them in items like new clothes, packs of crackers, small electronic devices.

or purses, they always have them in them. Or you can goto the shoe department and ask if they have any spare packs.

I had a phone that took a bath, and I used compressed air followed by the silica gel. A dehumidifier would also be good. The thing I'd be concerned about in your case is the pool water.

I would almost have been tempted to bathe it in distilled water first, followed by compressed air, just to get any pool chemicals off the circuit board.

I wrapped my phone in a a couple of bar towels, rubber banded them all together in a bundle, and tumbled it in a dryer at low heat. worked like a charm.

@PB2K, It's a little late to think about this, but if your phone hasn't come back, you might still get the data back by decoding your last backup. Go to this blog entry and follow the Uninnovate link to see how it's done.
