First off I'm not the hugest rap fan ever. But Kanye West's new album, 808s and Heartbreak, is awesome. The lyrics are so artful, the presentation is beautiful, and the music soulful. I recommend it for any music fan.

Kanye West is one of the biggest celebrity tools in America. I don't think I could ever stand to listen to his music, because I really hate him as a person.

He's got the most overinflated ego I've ever seen. The last thing he needs is another chart-topping album to help further solidify his self-importance.

He's had a phenomenal run, although I wasn't as big a fan of Graduation. Hopefully he keeps it up; his uncanny knack for consistently putting great beats with great tunes in a single album is pretty mind-blowing.

A lot of brilliant musicians have been somewhat eccentric and egocentric. I have no problems separating persona and music.

I've been a kanye fan for a few years. I like all his other albums. It took me a few listens to get into the previous album. I don't think any amount of listening is going to get me into this. It's not even rap/hip hop. It's poppy r&b with that annoying vocal effect all over the place.

From what I've heard it's wee heavy on the auto-tune. I'll give it a shot though.

A musician is an egocentric tool?

But seriously, this album is not getting a good reception from critics (edit: this is incorrect, I only happened to read two bad reviews before checking out Wikipedia). And I don't listen to hip-hop. Think I'll pass . . .

Oh, I know that. People with talent usually have at least some ego about it.

But Kanye goes way, way, way over the top. Recall this thread.

I have a collection of Kanye's more idiotic quotes, but I can't find it at the moment. He's notorious for saying crap like "I definitely should have won the Grammy this year" and "I'm better than everyone else" and "My album was number one", etc.

Kanye clearly thinks he's God's highest gift to mankind, above even Christ. He believes he's the most influential person in the ghetto music scene and beyond. I'd say his egoism goes way beyond the typical celebrity type.

He, and all public figures really, though particularly rap artists, is an actor playing a part. Who he portrays himself to be on stage and to his fans is who he thinks will sell the most records, it isn't necessarily who he really is. A friend of mine has worked with him on a few things and says that he's actually a pretty nice guy (he also happens to be extraordinarily talented, one of the few artists I enjoy listening to even if I can't stand the things he's actually saying).

I actually kind of get a kick out of his tantrums and stuff. What the hell do we expect him to be - soft spoken and humble? That's no fun.

As for the music, haven't heard anything on the new album that I like, but whatever.

Yeah I haven't bothered to give it a listen yet, but I haven't heard good things thus far. It's supposed to be a pretty depressing affair!

I just don't know how people couldn't like Kanye's stuff, from a hip-hop perspective. The first two albums, especially, have some phenomenal songs on them.

Easy. He's a sh*t rapper, with a sh*t voice and sh*t flow and lyrics.

Wasn't he the one that said "George Bush hates black people"?

At a music festival this past summer, NIN was playing against Kanye on a different stage. Trent said "some of you should go over to Kanye's stage. He needs fans", or something like that.

Hmmmm. Well, out of mild curiosity, what is your baseline comparison? (Who are your favourites I guess I mean?)

I don't generally approach music with an ear for picking out the "best x." Whether someone can play an instrument, or sing, or rhyme, that good doesn't seem to me to be correlative to how great they are at writing a good song. There's lots of artists who can spit far better than him, but they can't manage to put together a great song.

Having said that, I think some of his best songs that I enjoy are Family Business, Gone, Drive Slow, Diamonds from Sierra Leone, and Through the Wire.

His current album 808s is like a creative/artistic side project. He's sad(mom's death and marriage split) and he's putting his feelings on the subject into an album. The autotune voice deal(the T-Pain sound) is part of the experimentation.

As I understand it he plans to come out with a real Kanye sick beats and sick lyrics type album after.

His ego is big because he knows he's badass. Aren't we all told when we're young "you can be anything you want in life"? He's achieved ultimate levels as a producer, and also as a rapper.

He was on Conan last night, his interview was fun, his "Heartless" performance not as much. He was wearing a LEGO heart on his jacket. I thought he was gonna break it on the ground like so many a DSLR. That woulda been fun.

People who hate him, like, hate hate him, I dunno.

Kanye FTW!!

(do y'all know about the Freshman Adjustment Vol 1-3? Quite a few good tracks and rhymes on those, not many people are up on it)

I think his best song is Jesus Walks. Obviously not an ideological match for either of us, but I love the song.

I really like it because of the creative aspect. I also think it's the most emotional album to come out this year.

i'll post some but here's a sick beat from his new album.

Don't click this if you don't have some bass action. My room is shaking.

-------------------------------

"The rapper was performing at London's 02 arena on Tuesday night (11Nov08) - the day after the first anniversary of his mum's death - when he took a moment to remember those he had loved and lost.
In a freestyle rap, West asked of his fans, "What would you do if this s**t happened to you? You lost everything that mattered... Moved to L.A., where everything is fake... and your mum goes and does just that.

"Tell me what would you do if this happened to you, lost your girl and everything that mattered to you... For fame I paid the biggest cost, for fame I paid the biggest cost."

West's mother Donda died from complications after a cosmetic surgery procedure in November 2007, and the rapper split from fiancee Phifer in April (08)

I really don't have any opinion on Kanye, but it really bugs me when famous people bitch and moan about being famous. Fame is a choice. He chose to become rich and famous, he has no right to cry about the pitfalls of fame. Everyone knows the pitfalls of fame. Get over it. Go roll around in your piles of money.

This.

I sometimes feel kind of bad for celebrities who end up plastered all over Defamer.com and newsstand tabloids, but at the same time, they chose that life. The trade-off is that they're all fabulously wealthy for what amounts to very little real-world effort.

Well, that's pretty much what Kanye does. Rolls around in his piles of money and has no qualms about being rich and famous at all

If his new album follows his latest song on the radio, then I'm not going to like it one bit. I love kanye, but I think his new song is garbage. I hate the vocal effects and the overall feel. I think graduation was one of his best albums. I'll give his new on a shot to be fair though.

Had a listen to it yesterday, couldn't finish it. It was a bit over the top whining about his ex and the aforementioned auto-tune.

I understand him wanting to experiment, but I don't think he succeeded with this one.

I liked Kanye (more as a producer) and couldn't get through this album either. I hate the style. This first two albums were his best. The voice effects on this one ruin the entire album, more than anything for me. I'll pass.

I didn’t like it either. What I do like however is 88-Keys — The Death of Adam.
Reminds me of the earlier Kanye Albums, most of the tracks are really great if you don’t mind the lyrics.

I disagree with everyone—the auto-tune vocals made it hard to get through.
