Is there a way of assigning a specific key or series of Keys, maybe command and a function key, to type a pre-programed set of text?

Example: I would simply press Command-F5 and it automatically types out "I love to travel."

We have a computer in the kitchen and for space reasons we use an on-screen keyboard and only a mouse. I was hoping to add a "quick-key" for my most common online user-name and password.

To get things started...

TextExpander, https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/19147/textexpander, a favorite of mine, does what you want, and much more). You may care to give the free demo a go.

Another option is Typeinator, https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/18028/typinator
