PB is no longer detecting the installed RAM in the lower slot. Originally the machine was running 1.5 gigs of ram fine for about 18 months, and today just noticed in the system profiler that the lower slot was 'empty'.

So I switched the upper stick (1 gig) with the lower stick (OEM, 512 MB), and it again only detects the upper stick. i.e., in this config it sees only 512 MB of RAM.

So it is not the RAM.

So, anyone else have a PB where a RAM slot just crapped out?

Is there any other trouble shooting that I can do to figure out what is going on?

...or is this probably a motherboard issue, and only Apple can fix it.

TIA.

It is something that has happened to a reasonable number of people. I would check the Apple website to see if there was a recall programme for your model Mac. If not, do a search for reports of the lower RAM slot failing and you should find info on it (e.g. at www.macfixit.com). Only Apple will be able to fix it, and it will require a mobo replacement.

(After some weeks out of the country, I finally got around to going to the Apple store and I dropped off the computer...)

... and after 4 business days it was back in my hands and everything seems to be 'A' OK.

New logic board was installed, and both ram slots are now fully functional again.

YAY TEAM!
