Want to buy a New Late 2009 Mini, for a media center. Troubled by 10.6's lack of creator code support. Both my other macs are 10.5.8. Would files copied from 10.5 to a 10.6 machine and back again loose their creator codes? Searching the web brought me to a post stating that Late 2009 Minis could be downgraded by using Target Disk mode during the install. You install 10.5.6, then update to 10.5.8 which has all the drivers necessary for the Mini. Could something like this be done with a set of used Early 2009 Mini Restore Disks? Or would it take a Full install 10.5.6 retail disk? Would hate to buy both then have it not work. Has anyone done this? Appreciate your help.

Google led me to believe that the Minis were unique in this downgradability, hence I am posting here, rather than a SW section.

Why do you need creator codes for a media center Mac ?

Wouldn't you WANT that all file type always open with the same app on a media center ?

I use GraphicConverter to sometimes modify Jpegs. I would prefer GC to open these files, since they "own" them. Then other Jpegs get opened with Preview. The process of moving the files from my 10.5 imac to the mini, which I forsee as sort of a "server," since it would be set not to sleep, and then copying the same file wirelessly to the Macbook, it is unclear if they would still be "owned" by GC, or if they would now be considered Preview files. High-Def Video files I sometimes set via "Info" to open via Quicktime Player rather than iTunes, and I am not sure if this is supported under Snow Leopard as well. Remember, everybody uses a computer differently. I jumped from 9.0.4 directly to 10.5.1 and it was pretty easy. For me, Command-Tab works as a great choice for Application Switching, while I see no use for Spaces, for example. Others, who learned differently than I, probably love Spaces and can't live without it.

Well then, use LaunchCodes: creator code support for Snow Leopard to get creator code functionality in Snow Leopard.
