Any of you brainiacs and tech wizards have some ideas on how to surveil my house? Either with or without computer involvement? Meaning, I could use television if necessary, like a dedicated television system, for example. Also, what about recording any activity? And is there anything that is motion sensitive and can record when motion is detected?

I'm going on vacation and want my house looked after. We currently have a very good alarm system with fire and wireless backup, but I'd like to have electronic eyes if and when necessary.

It's compatible with most cameras, incuding analog so long as you have a digitizing card of some kind. But I use an iSight, just because I got one as a hand-me-down. I have it record on detecting motion, compress to h.264, and upload to my comcast ftp and email (since the email allowance is 10x as big as ftp).

Naw. Just don't have the time to do this setup. I kind of need step-by-step instrux because I've never done this type of thing before. Though, I'm good at electronics and basic mechanical repairs around the house.

Hahaha, that's great. When I was just in Wales a month or two ago there was a segment on the news about how the constabulary of some small town in the middle of nowhere was all up in arms about a new surveillance camera saying it was an invasion of privacy. Apparently there are still some parts of the countr(y/ies) with a bit of sense.
