I was going through my booze cabinet tonight and I came across a bottle of vodka. My brother gave it to me about 8 years ago. He said that he got it from some Russian diplomats visiting his company.

On the bottle it says product of the Ukraine and lists the brand name as Zaryanskaja. It is dark/brown in color and it tastes like gasoline smells. The entire label is in Russian.

Does anyone know anything about this remarkable beverage?

I always like to know the history of what I am drinking.

They probably put a little sherry in with the distillation process for color and a hint of flavor. I've seen this before on "The Thirsty Traveler", might be the same stuff.

For the time being, I'm sticking with Chopin. It's Polish, but it's damned good.

I don't know what exactly you're drinking but in terms of vodka I've been drinking Grey Goose lately. Who would have thought that the French could create such yummy vodka? Not me

I believe all the alcohol companies' websites have the disclaimers and those 'age checking thingies'.

Some of them were KGB. This was back when there was still a Soviet Union. I doubt they would let their geneticists go anywhere with some supervision. I have other artifacts from the visit such as binoculars and a watch that were military issue.

I wouldn't put that crap in my gas tank.

- Kettel One

Has anyone tried that Vodka derived from Soy? It's called "Nine"
pretty smooth.

It's been a few years but I do like Stolichnaya, straight or with ice, after at least a few days in the freezer!

I really don't like Stoli all that much. Ketel One's decent, I suppose. There's very few grain vodkas that I actually like. Potato all the way.

Haven't tried the soy stuff. Probably will pick up a bottle next time I go to the liquor store.

I'm no afficionado for sure, so could you recommend some of your favorites?

Try the "3". They have cool sample bottles.

My mistake, the Soy Vodka is called "3" not "9".... I wonder why I thought of 9?

No contest here, the coolest vodka ever is Vodka Kalashnikov.

I also must recommend best Finnish vodka, Koskenkorva(fansite, it's illegal to advertise vodkas up here) and best Estonian vodka, Viru Valge.

Mostly I just drink Chopin. It's ****ing delicious. Though, at $40/bottle it may be a little spendy depending on your budget. You should definitely give it a try. I haven't really tried all that many other potato vodkas, they're a lot less common and I'm stuck in a small town for the time being so I don't have access to much selection. They also tend to be more expensive. But I've found the taste of potato vodkas I have tried to be significantly better than grains. Although I know people who prefer grain. I'd recommend heading to your local liquor store and seeing what they have in the way of potato vodkas. As long as you don't buy too cheap of a bottle, it's not going to be crap, and at the very least you can use it for mixing.
