My GF's birthday is next week. I can't come up with any great ideas. We've been dating for about 7 months. For Christmas I built her an awesome bike rack, and got her a toaster oven. Yes I'm a practical gift giver. But I need some ideas!!

Hey, practical is thoughtful, shows that you notice what she needs. One of the first gifts my husband gave me was a new phone.

What does she like? Is she geeky? arty? athletic?

At 7 mos, you may be fine with just a really nice night out and some interesting jewelry (if she wears it).

Your sig is still enormous... wasn't 200px wide the old rule?

Anyhow. Listing some things she likes would be a good start.

IMO gifts should be things that the person wouldn't normally buy on their own. So if she's geeky, get her a cool geek toy from thinkgeek.com that she can put on her desk at work. If she's arty, maybe get her a really high-quality set of art supplies (watercolors, pencils, etc.).

I don't know of any woman (or man, for that matter) who would be disappointed to get a certificate for a day at a spa, either. Massages and mud wraps are universal happiness.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

These always go down well with my wife. Why not get 2 tickets, one for yourself?

It's like your speaking a foreign language. For my birthday, I hope she gets me a 3-ride pass to Highland Mountain Bike Park

A custom dessert basket with truffles, cookies, weird stuff etc.
Maybe tickets to a show (theater or something)
...and what snowi said.

You've only been dating 7 months so probably no need to go overboard or anything.

Personally I always try do event type stuff, some of it really cliche... I don't buy 'things' for people unless I happen to know something that they would like and I come across it; which is rare. It seems to work for me.

it's only been 7 months, but if you're head over heels for this girl, maybe a nice charm bracelet and some flowers, or some really good quality chocolates. Depends on budget.

Get a fake flower and mix it with real flowers, and place them on her bed with a note "I'll love you until the last flower dies. Happy Birthday!"

It's been 7 months not 17 years people, tone it down! Hows about a small stuffed animal, a fancy pair of craft scissors, and dinner at an indian restaurant that I don't like but she does.

My wife told me those are just a more subtle version of DiaB.
