Can I use a standard off-the-shelf USB 802.11g adapter with OS X? Is there a specific model that's known to work, or will any work, or none? Can the airport card connect to standard 802.11, or is it proprietary?

Wrong forum...

Anyways, "Airport" refers to 802.11b or 802.11g (actually "Airport Extreme").

The parts aren't quite off-the-shelf, but are interoperable. I used a 3rd party 802.11b adapter for my Xbox 360 and an iMac with built-in 802.11g Airport Extreme with my Netgear 802.11b/g wireless router.

I'm sorry, didn't mean to put this in the wrong place.. Which forum would have been correct? Thanks for answering my question anyways. Gives me a couple options to pursue now.

I have a mac mini without a wireless card so I bought a Belkin USB adaptor even though it said only Windows was supported. I found drivers on the net that work with it from ralinktech. Its not as nice as built in wireless but it works for me. A program needs to launch when you login to connect to the wireless connection. You can then quit that program. I've used it in both 10.3 and 10.4 Sometimes it can be a little finicky in that the program launches but it doesnt see/connect to the router. Re-launching the program makes it work though.

A blog with quite a lot of info:
