I will be in New York next week, and was thinking of picking up an iPhone.

When you buy the device, you don't have to sign up for a contract then and there, so was wondering if I brought the phone back to the UK, I could activate it there on the 02 network.

iPhones are cheaper in the US, hence the question.

Any idea if this will work?

I did just that earlier this week. I got it unlocked and now have been using it in both the UK and in norway.

I'd rather not have to unlock the phone, but I am guessing now that all iPhones sold in the USA are locked to AT&T and all iPhones sold in the UK will be locked to 02.

So probably not a good idea for me!

You'd have to unlock it and find a GSM carrier in the UK and a SIM card functional with that carrier.
