Some of you may remember the videos and pics I've posted before of my friend's Vette. It was previously supercharged and intercooled, this on top of a stoutly built stroker motor. He has since ditched the huffer for something a little more intense.
When I took these a few days ago, he was just buttoning it up, he has since put it all back together. Capable of 4-digit horsepower numbers, he'll be tuning it to be in the neighborhood of 700 horsepower. This is a street car with a 6-speed manual. Full coilover race suspension and 18" 3-piece Fikse wheels. 295 width tire up front, 345 tire width in the rear on a 12"(13" maybe) wide rim.
He's currently tuning it and getting the bugs out. This thing's gonna be insane.

Awesome. Is it a C5 or C6? I've got a buddy with a "lightly tuned" '06 C6 pulling out 580 hp at the rear wheels. Corvettes are ridiculously easy to get huge hp numbers out of.

You know, the gas prices really hit home when I heard two good ole boys at the hardware store (ok, it was northern hydraulic) talking, and one of them was telling the other about a big block Camaro that a buddy was fixing up. And the second fella said "how can he afford to gas it up?"

He also has the Z06 vents installed on his car:

Besides the car being barely completed, it hasn't been tuned or dyno'd, but when it's ready, with good sticky street tires(drag radials, etc) somewhere in the 10's wouldn't be out of the question. The trap speed will be outrageous, it could easily be upwards of 140mph.
Now say you ditched the IRS for a solid rear axle and slicks - easily 9 second quarter miles times.

He is a mechanic for General Motors, this is his trade.
Corvettes are FAST at the 'ring, and their motors are bulletproof. Also their C5R and C6R racecars(based on their road cars) are legendary.
Why so sad?

coffeecan? In the original post, his exhaust is well under the car, the mufflers and associated piping are not installed yet. Also the entire exhaust is wrapped in black heat wrap stuff, hundreds of feet of it.
In the videos, both cars have standard 'vette type exhausts, albeit with nary a restriction from the headers back. If you're referring to the blue car with 700HP, those are Borla tips from his Borla exhaust, stainless, fast, non-rice.

heh, my brother's camaro:
Lives it's life as a 330RWHP automatic-equipped grocery getter pulling 21 MPG via a custom tune. If it feels the need, it leaves you behind with 440RWHP. This video is three years old and the car still does the same thing today.

I presume that people who can afford these kinds of cars don't really have a problem with the price of gas - I mean, if that's your hobby, what proportion of your total hobby car related spending annually is gas?

A simple relocation of both intake filters would help for another 50-70 hp. They're right in the heat stream from above the IC and radiator.

from the owner:
"The ducts seem to working well. The other day I was driving in the morning to work...and I saw 81 degrees as my intake air temp, after driving for about 8 minutes(I live close to work now). On saturday, in the 5 o'clock heat of the day(summer in Miami), I saw 111 degrees as my highest intake air temp with about 20 minutes of driving and consistent stops. So, i'd say it's working pretty good. Also, we still gotta sand down the inside and cut some extracting vents in the hood"
NACA ducts on the hood direct fresh air directly into the air filters. Additionally the front license plate area is just wire mesh, along with the lower openings for the parking lights, a la Z06. Lots of air getting in there. When he makes the extracting vents above the headers that'll be even better.
But it is an eye opening(or closing?) experience when you lift the hood up for the first time after a drive. WARM to say the least.

Oooh, OK. It just sounded like a modified exhaust from a Honda. Makes it sound like an RC car.

Don't get me wrong, the engines are awesome. You can tell a Camaro a mile away. I'm talking about the looks. It's like they hit 1990 and never left. That's why when they stopped making the Camaro no one cared. Now they're bringing it back and still make it look retarded.
There hasn't been a good looking Camaro for 30 years.

quotes:
"Also, on the drive home, he was seeing 25 MPG at 1800 rpm for the 3 seconds that he kept his foot out of the boost."
"There was no leaning on the tune or playing with the dyno to make these number either. Pump gas, a whopping 12 deg max timing....rich as hell all the way till the pump starts to run out around 5800 rpm...pressure was dropping to about 52 psi.
The first full pull showed 730 rwhp, and you could smell the tires smoking, follow up pull made 786, backed up 5 minutes later with a 783 pull."
This is with a stock bottom end and unmilled Air-Flow-Research Heads.
780 horsepower to the wheels. Holy Jebus.

Why do Americans always get so damn technical with cars describing every tire feature and engine featre? I prefer the way Top Gear does it, their reviews are much more poetic and cultural, the only technical details they give away are top speed, the BREAK horsepower (not just horsepower), and the naught to sixty time, MAYBE something about the suspension, the torque or some special feature but THATS IT.

Top Gear is entertainment for people that don't care much about reality or details, but some people are interested in those details, and I don't think it's a geographic phenomena.
