The new Intel Mac Mini uses a 2.5" laptop drive, running at 5400 RPM, at either 60 or 80 GB capacities.
The G4 Mac Mini uses a 2.5" laptop drive, running at 4200 RPM, at either 40 or 80 GB capacities.

Does the current version (core solo) run subjectively slower, compared to a g4 desktop? Because I read first generation mini ran slow because of the notebook drive.

The 5400 RPM drive will decrease the speed of the system, and is one of two main bottlenecks in the mini (the other being integrated graphics). You won't see huge amounts of difference when surfing the web, checking mail, itune-ing etc, but you will start seeing a slightly more significant one when it comes to maybe iMovie, or heavy garageband use.

Those are the base model capacities, Core Solo and Core Duo respectively. Optional are 100 or 120 GB capacities. My 120 GB is a Seagate Momentus 5400.2, ST9120821AS
It's dead quiet... I have to have my ear within a foot of the mini to barely hear it spinning. It's also cooler running than a 7200 rpm in the Mini's tiny case, so the fan hardly ever comes on. Quiet is more important to me than more performance.

I xbenched a mac Mini against a 1.67 gh Powerbook -- both with 5400 RPM drives. The Mini drive was significantly (35% or so) faster than the PB's, probably because it is serial ATA.

I propose that the difference in performance had nothing to do with the mini's drive being SATA.
I'd attribute it to a difference in cache, difference in disk usage, or just Xbench being poo.
