The dvd drive in my MBP is broken and I really want to watch dvds again. So I need to buy an external dvd drive but I need it to be powered by the usb or firewire and be tiny.

Has anyone had to do this as well ? And what did you end up getting that worked ?

Fortunately either USB (2.5W per port, so you'd need to use 2 ports) or Firewire (7W shared between the ports on the MBP) can power a slim external optical drive.

Newegg.com - PLEXTOR Silver 8X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X DVD+R DL 8X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 5X DVD-RAM 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-R 24X CD-RW 24X CD-ROM 2MB Cache USB 2.0 External Super Multi-Portable DVD Burner Model PX-608CU - OEM is one option, unfortunately it's out of stock.

Or you could buy a Dell D/Bay and a slim optical drive seperately.

Why not just buy an internal DVD burner and pay CompUSA the $30 to do the swap?

Other than the difficulty of finding slot-load slim drives for a reasonable price these days.

$190?!?!?! I paid $60 for a Pioneer slot-loading DVD burner last year for a PowerBook.
