Is it even possible for him to humiliate himself at this point? He's pretty much run out of dignity.

That's almost as good as Bush Sr. throwing up in the lap of the Japanese Prime Minister several years back while on a state visit...

You've got to have dignity in order to humiliate yourself.

Just sayin'.

Where's spacefreak? This thread would be so much more fun with some of Bush's blind defenders.

I am NOT one to blindly defend President Bush but I am pretty sure he is referring to the White House Executive Chef, Cristeta Comerford when he talks about being reminded of the Phillipines while "eating dinner at the White House". She is Filipino and it was a *big* deal a few years back when she got selected for the position. She was the first woman in the position as well as the first chef to not come from a professional background in formal Continental (i.e.: French) cuisine.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

See my post above. The White House Executive Chef is a woman from the Philippines.

So let me see. Your claim is that Bush is not, in fact, struggling to think of anything sensible to say, and so blunders into an ethnic stereotype because he only knows one Filipino American, and that's his cook?

"RESIDENT BUSH: Madam President, it is a pleasure to welcome you back to the Oval Office. We have just had a very constructive dialogue. First, I want to tell you how proud I am to be the President of a nation that -- in which there's a lot of Philippine-Americans. They love America and they love their heritage. And I reminded the President that I am reminded of the great talent of the -- of our Philippine-Americans when I eat dinner at the White House."

No, no, in fact, you want to claim this as terribly witty. So much so that neither Arroyo nor anyone else except you gets it? Thanks for playing. Better luck next time.

Who said he was trying to be witty? I thought he was just saying that he particularly enjoys the White House chef's cooking. That was what came to my mind when I heard it, and I hadn't even known Comerford at the time. It's not a terribly salient remark, but not horrendously stupid either.

Man, I love Mexican people. I'm reminded of their talents every time I go to Chipotle for lunch, or whenever I use a public restroom.

Mexicans run Chipotle? I had thought that was the WASP version of Mexican food.

While he was trying to formulate a cogent thought based around this fact, his actual remark came out as pretty ham-fisted. But yeah, what's new?

From the White House's Press Release quoting the President:
First, I expressed our deep condolences to those who suffered as a result of the typhoon. And I know there's some families that are hurting. Some are wondering whether or not their loved ones will, you know, reappear. We, the American people care about the human suffering that's taking place, and we send our prayers.

reappear? as ghosts?
