I have a canon gl1, pismo 400/192mb ram/60gb firewire drive. I wanted to know how I can blank out my used tapes, instead of recording over them.

If you are using Final Cut Pro, you can "black and code" the tapes, and that will erase them. I'm not sure about iMovie, but I assume it has a similar function.
